Removal & Installation

  1. Theft deterrent control module is located in steering column, surrounding ignition lock cylinder. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove insulator-to-instrument panel (IP) push-in retainers. Remove insulator-to-dash mat press-on retainers. Unsnap IP courtesy light from IP insulator. Remove IP insulator from instrument panel. Remove bolts/screws from bottom of knee bolster. Pull on knee bolster in order to release upper clips.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove air bag module. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Remove horn pad. Mark steering wheel hub in relation to slash mark on steering shaft for installation reference. Loosen steering wheel shaft nut, positioning it flush with end of shaft. Using appropriate steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Disconnect steering wheel harness connectors.
  3. Remove steering column tilt lever. Remove steering column lower trim cover screws. Tilt lower trim cover down and slide lower trim cover in order to disengage locking tabs. Remove fasteners only from upper steering column trim cover. Lift upper trim cover to gain access to ignition lock cylinder access hole.
  4. Insert a bent tip awl into ignition lock cylinder access hole. Turn ignition switch to START position and use bent-tip awl to push down on ignition lock cylinder retainer. Release ignition lock cylinder to RUN position. Remove ignition lock cylinder from lock module.
  5. Disconnect harness connector at base of steering column. Pull theft deterrent control module from ignition lock cylinder housing. Remove harness connector and wires from steering column. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel shaft nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 N.m). Perform THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS  under PROGRAMMING.
