Alternator & Regulator: Description

Alternator has an internal fan and an internal electronic Integrated Circuit (IC) voltage regulator. Voltage regulator is part of the rotor, brush and brush holder assembly. See Figure. Voltage regulator automatically reduces regulated voltage when the voltage regulator's ambient temperature increases, so battery charging voltage is maintained at the proper level.

Charging system voltage is maintained at an operating range of 13.1-15.4 volts. Alternating current produced is rectified to direct current through 6 one-way diodes. A charging system warning light is used to indicate charging system malfunction. If there is an interruption in charging system warning light circuit, an alternator relay functions as a back-up for electrical flow from ignition switch. Warning light circuit energizes field coil of alternator. See Figure.
