Distributor Reference Signal

The distributor transmits a signal to ECM to indicate engine RPM and crankshaft position. Ignition timing is controlled by the High Energy Ignition (HEI) module until engine RPM signal to ECM reaches 400 RPM. At 400 RPM, the ECM supplies a 5-volt signal to HEI module, which switches timing control to the ECM.
