Test A: Cruise Control Inoperative/Malfunctioning
NOTE:
To avoid misdiagnosis, ensure preliminary inspection and all checks have been performed. See PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
NOTE:
Ensure proper operation of brakelight system. Ensure proper operation of transmission range switch. Inspect throttle linkage for mechanical binding which could cause system to malfunction.
- If cruise control diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If cruise control diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to CRUISE CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Cruise Control Module (CCM) 10-pin harness connector. CCM is located on left side of engine compartment, near strut tower. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using test light connected to ground, probe CCM harness connector terminal "F" (Pink wire). See Figure . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 36 .
- Connect a test light between CCM harness connector terminals "E" (Black/White wire) and "F" (Pink wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 37 .
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Ensure cruise control switch is in OFF position. Using a test light connected to ground, probe CCM harness connector terminals "A" (Gray wire), "B" (Dark Blue wire) and "C" (Gray/Black wire). If test light does not illuminate at any terminal, go to next step. If test light illuminates at any terminal, go to step 16 .
- Turn cruise control switch to ON position. Using a test light connected to ground, probe CCM harness connector terminals "A" (Gray wire), "B" (Dark Blue wire) and "C" (Gray/Black wire). If test light illuminates at any terminal, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate at any terminal, go to step 17 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe CCM harness connector terminal "B" (Dark Blue wire). Press and hold SET/COAST switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 19 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe CCM harness connector terminal "C" (Gray/Black wire). Press and hold RESUME/ACCEL switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 20 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe CCM harness connector terminal "D" (Brown wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 21 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe CCM harness connector terminal "D" (Brown wire). Monitoring test light while depressing brake pedal. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 22 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe CCM harness connector terminal "G" (White wire). If test light does not illuminate, leave test light connected, and go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 23 .
- While monitoring test light, depress brake pedal. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 24 .
- Using a test light connected to battery voltage, probe CCM harness connector terminal "H" (Dark Green wire). If test light does not illuminate, leave test light connected, and go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 25 .
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector. DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. Using scan tool, command CRUISE INHIBIT/ENABLE OFF. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 26 .
- Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and CCM harness connector terminal "J" (White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 27 .
- Test drive vehicle. If speedometer operates normally, go to step 28 . If speedometer does not operate normally, repair speedometer by symptom. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - AZTEK article.
- Check for short to voltage in signal circuit that caused test light to illuminate. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem is found, go to step 34 .
- Check for open or high resistance in Gray wire between cruise control switch harness connector "B" and CCM harness connector terminal "A". See Figure and Fig 1 . If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 .
- Check for open or high resistance in ignition 1 voltage circuit, Pink wire between cruise control switch harness connector "A" and CCM harness connector terminal "F". See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem is found, go to step 34 .
- Check for open or high resistance in cruise control set/coast signal circuit, Dark Blue wire between cruise control switch harness connector terminal "D" and CCM harness connector terminal "B". See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 34 .
- Check for open high resistance in cruise control resume/accelerate signal circuit between cruise control switches terminal "C" and CCM harness connector terminal "C" (Gray/Black wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 34 .
- Check for open or high resistance in cruise control release switch signal circuit between CCM harness connector terminal "D" and underhood fuse block harness connector C3 terminal F11 (Brown wire). See Figure and Fig 2 . If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 29 .
- Check for short to voltage in cruise control release switch signal circuit between CCM harness connector terminal "D" and underhood fuse block harness connector C3 terminal F11 (Brown wire). If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 29 .
- Check for short to voltage in brakelight switch signal circuit between brakelight switch harness connector terminal "B" and CCM harness connector terminal "G" (White wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 30 .
- Check for open or high resistance in brakelight switch signal circuit between brakelight switch harness connector terminal "B" and CCM harness connector terminal "G" (White wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 30 .
- Check for short to ground in cruise inhibit signal circuit between CCM harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 72 (Dark Green wire). See Figure and Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 33 .
- Check for open or high resistance in cruise inhibit signal circuit between CCM harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 72 (Dark Green wire). If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 33 .
- Check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in cruise engaged signal circuit between CCM harness connector terminal "J" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 59 (White wire). If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 33 .
- Check for open or high resistance in vehicle speed signal circuit between CCM harness connector terminal "K" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 55 (Dark Green wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 35 .
- Check cruise control release switch adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE/BRAKELIGHT SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust cruise control release switch if necessary. After adjustment, go to step 43 . If adjustment is okay, go to step 31 .
- Check brakelight switch adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE/BRAKELIGHT SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust brakelight switch if necessary. After adjustment, go to step 43 . If adjustment is okay, go to step 32 .
- Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals at cruise control release switch harness connector. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 38 .
- Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals at brakelight switch harness connector. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 39 .
- Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals at PCM harness connectors. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 40 .
- Inspect for poor, loose, corroded connections, or damaged wiring at cruise control switch harness connector. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found, go to step 41 .
- Check for poor, loose, corroded terminals, or connector damage at CCM. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step 43 . If no problem was found or condition still exists, go to step 42 .
- Repair open or short in Pink wire between underhood fuse block CRUISE fuse (10-amp) and CCM harness connector terminal "F". See Figure and Fig 2 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair are made, go to step 43 .
- Repair open in Black/White wire between ground and CCM harness connector terminal "E". See Figure . Ground point is located on bell housing left of starter, along with battery ground. After repairs are made, go to step 43 .
- Replace cruise control release switch. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE/BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to step 43 .
- Replace brakelight switch. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE/BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to step 43 .
- Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - ALERO & GRAND AM article. After repairs are made, go to step 43 .
- Replace multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - AZTEK article. After repairs are made, go to step 43 .
- Replace CCM. See CRUISE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to next step.
- Road test vehicle at speeds greater than 25 MPH and fully exercise cruise control system. If cruise control system operates normally, testing is complete. If system is inoperative or malfunctions, return to step 2 .
