On-Vehicle Deployment

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Turn ignition off and remove key. Put on safety glasses.
  2. Disconnect driver-side and passenger-side air bag module Yellow 2-pin connectors. See Figure & Figure . Disconnect driver and passenger side impact air bag module connectors. See Figure. Cut air bag module harness connectors from vehicle leaving at least 6" (152 mm) of wire at each connector. Strip 0.50" (13 mm) of insulation from each wire lead to the connector.
  3. Cut 2 deployment wires at least 20 feet (6.1 m) long from 18-gauge multi-strand wire. Strip 0.50" (13 mm) of insulation from each connector wire lead. Twist wires together at one end to short.
  4. Twist together one driver-side air bag module connector wire lead to other end of each deployment wire. See Fig 1. Bend twisted connection flat and wrap tightly with electrical tape to insulate. Repeat for remaining connector wire lead.
  5. Remove all loose objects from front seats and ensure no one is in vehicle. Connect deployment harness to driver-side air bag module connector. Stretch wires away from vehicle as far as possible.
  6. Repeat steps  3 and  4 for passenger-side air bag module and side impact air bag modules. Cover windshield and front door openings with a drop cloth.
  7. Separate driver-side air bag module deployment wire ends. Connect wire leads to a 12-volt battery. Driver-side air bag module should deploy. Repeat deployment procedure for remaining SIR components. If any SIR component did not deploy, go to next step. If components did deploy, disconnect wires from battery. DO NOT touch metal surfaces of components for at least 10 minutes due to heat generated during deployment. Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling deployed components. Wash hands with mild soap and water.
  8. If any SIR component did not deploy, carefully remove component from vehicle. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Temporarily store air bag modules with trim facing up. Contact manufacturer for additional instructions.
