Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, and 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the leaf spring assembly to the vehicle. See Figure.
  2. Install the front spring hanger bracket bolt.
  3. Install the front spring hanger bracket nut.
  4. Install the rear spring hanger bracket bolt. See Figure.
  5. Install the rear spring hanger bracket nut.
    NOTE: Do not reuse the U-bolts.
  6. Install the spring spacer. See Figure.
  7. Install the U-bolts.
  8. Install the anchor plate.
    CAUTION: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  9. Install the U-bolt nuts.

    Tighten 

    • For 15 series without rear wheel steering tighten the U-bolt nuts to 72 N.m (53 ft lbs).
    • For all 15 series with rear wheel steering and 15HD/25/35/36 series tighten the U-bolts to 150 N.m(110 ft lbs )
    • Tighten the front hanger bracket nut to 150 N.m (110 ft lbs).
    • Tighten the rear hanger bracket nut to 95 N.m (70 ft lbs).
  10. Install the fuel tank for left side applications. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement in Engine Controls .
  11. Install the trailer hitch, if equipped.
  12. Remove the rear axle support.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
