Powertrain Control Module: Notes
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
CAUTION:
Do not touch the PCM connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board to prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) damage. Do not remove the integrated circuit boards from the carrier.
NOTE:
To prevent internal damage to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the ignition must be OFF when disconnecting or reconnecting the PCM connector. Service should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) re-programming. If the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, the PCM should be inspected first to verify the PCM is the correct part. DTC P0602 indicates the EEPROM programming has malfunctioned. When DTC P0602 is set, re-program the EEPROM.
