Power Windows System Controls

The power windows system can be controlled by any of the following:

• The Body Control Module controls the RAP relay which in turn supplies power to the power window system. The Body Control Module must be requesting the RAP relay to energize, or the ignition switch must be in the RUN or ACCY position for the power window system to operate.
• A power window, up or down, switch activation.
• A power window switch input to the Power Window Control Module for the driver's window express down feature.

Important:  The power windows system has voltage applied to it through the Windows circuit breaker. The body control module (BCM) contains the Retained Accessory Power (RAP) subsystem. When active, the RAP subsystem allows the windows to operate for 10 minutes after the ignition is turned off or until a door is opened. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES for a complete understanding of RAP operation.

When the ignition switch is in the RUN position or the ACCY position or the BCM is in the RAP mode, voltage is applied to the Windows circuit breaker. The battery positive voltage circuit from the Windows circuit breaker applies voltage to the driver window switch, the passenger window switch, and the power window control module. The window motors and switches are grounded through the driver window switch. The passenger window can be operated from the passenger window switch and the driver window switch. The driver window can only be operated from the driver window switch. The windows are driven by reversible motors. Each window is controlled by a switch that is normally closed to ground. When any switch is moved to the up position, battery voltage is applied to the window motor through the Power Window Motor Left Front Up circuit or through the Power Window Motor Right Front Up circuit. The motor is grounded through the Power Window Motor Left Front Down circuit or through the Power Window Motor Right Front Down circuit. When any switch is moved to the down position, the voltage polarity at the window motor is reversed. Battery voltage is applied to the motor through the Power Window Motor Left Front Down circuit or through the Power Window Motor Right Front Down circuit. The motor is grounded through the Power Window Motor Left Front Up circuit or through the Power Window Motor Right Front Up circuit.

Each window motor contains an internal electronic circuit breaker. If a window switch is held in the up or down position after the window is fully opened or closed, the circuit breaker opens to stop the motor. The circuit breaker also opens to stop the window when the window becomes obstructed during operation. The circuit breaker resets when the voltage to the motor is interrupted.
