Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check

CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. Before disconnecting battery:
NOTE: Test is written specifically for use with J 42000 digital battery tester. Battery tester requires correct connections to battery terminals. Do not use common bolts or nuts as adapters when testing battery, use test adapters that are provided with J 4200 digital battery tester. A failure to obtain correct connections during test may result in a failed test on a good battery.
  1. Connect battery tester to battery terminal bolts. If connections to battery terminal bolts in vehicle are in doubt, disconnect battery cables and connect battery tester test adapters to battery terminals. Follow battery tester instructions for testing a removed battery. If battery tester displays REPLACE BATTERY with battery tester connected to battery with battery cables connected, disconnect battery cables and connect battery tester test adapters to battery terminals. Follow battery tester instructions for testing a removed battery. If battery tester displays REPLACE BATTERY as a result of testing a removed battery, replace battery and go to next step. If battery tester does not display REPLACE BATTERY, go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on left side of instrument panel, near steering column. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. NOTE: If using Tech 2 scan tool, obtain information using Class 2 Message Monitor feature.
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Attempt to establish communication with all control modules. If scan tool communicates with all control modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all control modules, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. NOTE: If using Tech 2 scan tool, use Class 2 DTC Check feature to determine which modules have DTCs set.
  6. Select DISPLAY DTCs function on scan tool for all modules. Record all displayed DTCs, DTC status, and module which set DTC. If any DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If no DTCs are retrieved:
  7. If communication DTCs (DTCs beginning with a "U") are not retrieved, go to next step. If any DTCs beginning with "U" are retrieved, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  8. If DTC B1000 or B1001 are retrieved, go to DTC B1000: BODY CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTION  and/or DTC B1001: OPTION CONFIGURATION ERROR  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. If DTC B1000 or B1001 are not retrieved, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
