Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 GMC Envoy XUV, 2004 GMC Envoy XL, 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, and 2004 Buick Rainier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    IMPORTANT: It is necessary to record the remaining engine oil life. If the replacement module is not programed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil life will default to 100%. If the replacement module is not programmed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil will need to be changed at 5000 km (3,000 mi) from the last engine oil change.
  1. Using a scan tool, retrieve the percentage of remaining engine oil. Record the remaining engine oil life.
  2. NOTE: Refer to Ignition Switch and PCM Connectors Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
  4. IMPORTANT: The PCM cover should be flexible enough to hold out of the way while removing the PCM. Remove the PCM cover only if replacing the cover.

  5. Remove the PCM cover retainers.
  6. Remove the PCM cover.

  8. Release the spring latch from the PCM.
  9. Release the PCM mounting tabs from the PCM.
  10. Remove the PCM.

    NOTE: Refer to Ignition Switch and PCM Connectors Notice in Cautions and Notices.
    NOTE: Refer to Handling ESD Sensitive Parts Notice in Cautions and Notices.
    IMPORTANT: Remove any debris from around the PCM connector surfaces before servicing the PCM. Inspect the PCM module connector gaskets when diagnosing or replacing the PCM. Ensure that the gaskets are installed correctly. The gaskets prevent contaminant intrusion into the PCM.
  12. Loosen the PCM electrical connector bolts.
  13. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors.
  14. Remove the PCM from the vehicle.
