Output Test
NOTE:
Ensure B+ connection at generator is tight and insulating sleeve is not pinched between nut and washer. See Figure
. Generator output may be low if connection is loose.
- Ensure connections at battery, generator, and starter are clean and tight. Ensure generator, engine, and body are properly grounded. Ensure generator drive belt is tight and in good condition.
- Connect ammeter following manufacturer's instructions. Connect voltmeter leads to battery terminals. Start engine and run at 3000 RPM. Adjust carbon pile on tester to obtain maximum generator output. DO NOT allow voltage to drop to less than 12.6 volts.
- Output should equal generator rating (stamped on generator) minus 16-20 amps. If output is more than 16-20 amps below generator rating, replace regulator and retest. If output is still low, repair or replace generator.
