SERVICE CAMPAIGN 157 15

Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery.

Cars already delivered must be rectified in connection with a scheduled visit to the garage for service or repairs.

CARS AFFECTED

Saab 9-3 M01-02 with engine alternative D223L and within VIN range 12020001 - 22043936

BACKGROUND

The software to the engine management system PSG 16 has been revised in order to improve the diagnosis of diagnostic trouble codes P0314 and P0401. Both signal the error message CHECK ENGINE.

SYMPTOMS

Poor driveability.

PARTS REQUIRED

  1. 53 43 043 Software for PSG 16 M01 (2SC4LM80)
  2. 53 43 017 Software for PSG 16 M02 (CSCMLM40)

PROCEDURE

Before proceeding, check box B2 of the modification identity plate. If the box is not marked, continue as follows.

READ THIS FIRST!

Check that the computer to be used includes the latest issues of Tech2 and TIS 2000 with the correct versions for SPS programming.

TOOLS FOR SPS PROGRAMMING

  1. PC with TIS2000 and WIS installed
  2. Dongle with adapter
  3. Tech 2 with 32 Mbit card
  4. Tech 2's PC cable with RS232 adapter (max length 10 m)
  5. Battery Tester 311
  6. Pliers

12 VOLT CURRENT REQUIREMENT FOR PROGRAMMING

It is essential that the battery is in good condition in order to carry out successful SPS programming. Before work is started the status of the battery must be checked. This is done using "Battery Analyzer 311" Battery tester 86 12 533 (EU) or 86 12 525 (US). Follow the battery tester instructions. Remove the car's main fuses with the battery in order to eliminate "System noise" during the test. Fit the main fuses after the battery test has been carried out.

If necessary charge the battery with low level current (less than 15 A) at the same time as SPS programming is carried out. Avoid rapid charging (above 20 A) as this can disrupt SPS programming.

During SPS programming all current-demanding components/systems must be shut down, such as lighting, ACC, the audio system, electrically heated seats, seat ventilation and cooling fans.

If SPS programming is cut off due to low battery capacity and Tech 2 communication terminates the battery and connections must be dealt with first. Remove the cable from the battery's positive terminal and wait for at least 12 seconds before the cable is connected again. This must be carried out before SPS programming can be begun again.

SPS PROGRAMMING

Follow the instructions below carefully for a successful result.

  1. Read and note the car's VIN.
  2. Connect Tech2 to the data link connector and turn the ignition key to the ON position.
  3. Start Tech 2 and read off any diagnostic trouble codes from all systems.
  4. Select Diagnostics

    Then select

    1. Model year: 2001 or 2002
    2. Car Type: 9-3
    3. System: All
    4. System: Read / Clear all DTC information
    5. System: Read all DTC Information

Then follow the instructions in Tech 2.

  5. Note the diagnostic trouble codes.
  6. Go back to the main menu and select Service Programming System (SPS).

    Select Request Information

    Then select

    1. Model year: 2001 or 2002
    2. Car Type: 9-3
    3. Group: Engine
    4. System: PSG 16

Then follow the instructions in Tech 2.

  7. Connect Tech 2 with dongle to the COM port on the computer via a flat cable.
NOTE: Tech 2 can be connected to the car and the PC at the same time during the entire SPS programming.
  8. Go to the "Start Menu" in Tech 2.
  9. Start the program TIS 2000 and select Service Programming System.

    Then select:

    1. Diagnostic Tool: Tech 2
    2. Programming progress: Reprogram ECU
    3. ECU location: Vehicle
    4. Follow the instructions and select Next
    5. Verify VIN and select Next
    6. Verify Car data and select Next

If the software in Selected ECU software is newer than the software in Current ECU software, select Reprog

  10. After the program transfer is complete disconnect Tech2 from the computer and reconnect it to the car.
  11. Remove the cooling fans' relay "FAN Low" in the relay box in the engine bay.
  12. Shut down all demanding power consumers: such as lighting, ACC, the audio system, electrically heated seats, seat ventilation, etc.
  13. Start Tech2 and select Service Programming System (SPS)

    Select Program ECU.

Follow the instructions in Tech 2.

  14. Check that the ACC fan is shut down during programming.
  15. Wait until the entire SPS programming is carried out. This takes approx. 15 minutes.
  16. When the message Programming successful is displayed in Tech 2, SPS programming is finished.
  17. Go back to the Main Menu in Tech 2.
  18. Fit the cooling fans' relay.
  19. Read off diagnostic trouble codes from all systems (see point 3). Compare with any diagnostic trouble codes before SPS programming. If new diagnostic trouble codes are generated then these can have arisen with programming.
  20. Rectify and clear any diagnostic trouble codes in all systems
  21. Connect an exhaust extraction hose and start the engine in order to check its operation. Switch off the engine.
  22. Disconnect Tech 2 and fold back the data link connector cover.

MARKING THE MODIFICATION IDENTITY PLATE

After carrying out the procedures on the cars affected as per MI210-2362, MI210-2363 and MI248-2368 the modification identity plate must be marked in box B2. If the procedure is carried out by the importer, mark the box with the number "7" and if carried out by the dealer with the number "8".
