APPLICATION

Model(s): 1996-99 Saturn Models

Bulletin No.: SSS - 01.00A

NOTE: This Update is a supplement to SERVICE STALL SYSTEM (SSS)/SCAN TOOL UPDATE 01.00 dated December 1998.

TIS 2000 APPLICATIONS

SERVICE PROGRAMMING SYSTEM (SPS)

  1. If reprogramming 96-99 vehicles you MUST use the red programming adapter. Failure to use this adapter will result in the inability to reprogram a vehicle. This adapter may also be used for normal communication with the vehicle.
  2. If a reprogramming error is received, and the retry button does not allow you to continue, do not remove power from the PCM by disconnecting the PCM, disconnecting the vehicle battery, or removing the PCM fuse. Contact the Saturn Help Desk at 1-800-7SATURN prompt 4.
  3. After completing a PCM programming event on a 96-99, the crank adaptive must be learned. The crank adaptive learn procedure can be done automatically using the Tech 2.
    • Once the vehicle has been identified on the Tech 2, select "Powertrain" then "Special Functions" then "Crankshaft Pos. Variation Learn". Follow the screen instructions. The Tech 2 will wait for the enable criteria to be met then, using the IAC motor, increase the engine speed slowly to 3,000 RPM. The crank adaptive will now be learned.
  4. When the screen used to select the options and emission type is first displayed, the inner portion of the screen is not sized correctly. If you click on the "maximize" button in the upper right hand corner the screen will be correctly sized.
  5. 91-95 PCM options must be programmed with SSS SPS application. 96-99 vehicle PCM options should be set with the Tech 2. (Note: Tire sizes cannot be correctly programmed with the Tech 2 at this time.)
  6. After reprogramming 92 PCMs, the A/C compressor may be inoperative even though the option bit says Yes. If this condition is experienced, contact the Saturn Technical Assistance Center. It may be necessary to obtain a pre-programmed PCM.
  7. A selection for National emissions type is not available for 1999 model year service PCMs. 1999 SOHC PCMs do utilize a national calibration certified for either CA/MA/NY or Federal emissions. When reprogramming these PCMs, select Federal emissions to identify the national emissions type.
  8. When a 91-95 ABS control module is replaced on a vehicle with a manual transmission, be sure to follow the "Replace & Reprogram ECU" procedure on page 3-5 in the Service Stall System User Guide. If the ABS module is replaced on a Manual Transmission using the "Reprogram ECU", an ABS lamp will result with DTC 12 due to the transmission being incorrectly identified.

SERVICE PROGRAMMING SYSTEM (SPS) - EV1

99 EV1 programming of the BPM and PCM are not yet supported. Complete 99 EV1 programming support is expected in the next SSS software version.

TECH 2 VIEW

Using Tech 2 view to print freeze frame/failure records is not recommended. Each record requires two screen prints and each page will take approximately 11 minutes to print! Please see the recommended method of obtaining freeze frame/failure records for reference in the General section of this update. Line printing from Tech 2 view is being investigated for the next SSS software version.

SNAPSHOT UPLOAD

  1. When changing between saved snapshots you may get an "Illegal Operation" error message. This commonly occurs when the current snapshot is being viewed with a graph plot and another snapshot is uploaded or opened from and existing file. When an err.or is experienced, just close the application by selecting the red circle with the X and restart the snapshot application. To avoid the error, close the graph display in the current snapshot before uploading or opening another one.
  2. The snapshot files when uploaded are only named with a time and date, the VIN is not included. When saving a snapshot to file, it's a good idea to describe the file (in the "description box") with the VIN or CSO information to identify the snapshot. A maximum of 10 snapshot/capture data files can be saved on the Hard Drive. CD Version 1.01 (due in late January, 1999) will provide the capability of saving larger numbers of files.
  3. Using Snapshot Upload Capture Info to print freeze frame/failure records is not recommended (saving is OK). A record can require two screen prints and each page will take approximately 11 minutes to print! Please see the recommended method of obtaining freeze frame/failure records in the General section of this update. Line printing from Snapshot Upload is being investigated for the next SSS software version.

BULLETIN VIEWER

The print function for the bulletin system is not functional for this SSS software version. If you attempt to print a bulletin, you will only get a header and a footer. This will be corrected in the next SSS software version.

TECH 2 SCAN TOOL - GENERAL

The Satum Software User's Guide for the Tech 2 is intended to be an addendum to the Tech 2 user's guide included in each Tech 2 kit. It is to be installed in the gray three ring binder as an additional tabbed section. Retain the yellow tabbed sections for information on Tech 2 hardware and GM vehicle software applications.

TECH 2 SCAN TOOL - EV1

  1. 97 EV1 diagnostics are not fully supported on the Tech 2. Complete 97 EV1 diagnostic support is expected in the second-quarter Tech 2 software version. Use the PDT for most 97 EV1 scan tool diagnostic functions. Reset SOC and Initiate Leveling for 97 & 99 EV1 can be found on the Tech 2.
  2. The 99 All Codes Test may not report the entire list of History DTCs present. This is being investigated for a resolution in the next SSS version.
