Test A: Ignition Key Lock Cylinder Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Chevrolet Corvette. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Do not disconnect Yellow 2-way SIR connector. PASS-Key(R) connector is a 3-way connector with Purple/White wire and White/Black wire.
  1. Remove hush panel under steering panel. Disconnect 3-way PASS-Key(R) connector at base of steering column. Connect male and female connectors to mating connectors on Interrogator (J-35628-A) and Adapter (J-35628-210).
  2. Insert customer ignition key into ignition switch lock cylinder. Turn Interrogator on. Rotate ignition lock cylinder while key is inserted to insure correct code is read in all positions. Window above key code reader indicates electrical code for key (1-15) or indicates "E" for error.
  3. If code is correct in all positions, lock cylinder is functioning properly. If code is correct only in some positions, obtain a spare key or make a replacement. See PROGRAMMING  .
  4. Read code again. Compare displayed code to the following condition:
    • A correct code indicates original key is defective.
    • An incorrect code indicates a defective lock cylinder.
  5. Insert customer's ignition key in key code reader on Interrogator to check customer's ignition key. Compare displayed code to the following conditions:
    • Replace the key with a spare key or use replacement key if Interrogator indicates "E".
    • Replace lock cylinder if Interrogator indicates electrical code (1-15). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - CORVETTE article.
