Ignition System Checks
To properly inspect the spark plugs or to correct a condition, refer to the following procedures:
- To properly inspect the spark plugs or to correct a condition, See IGNITION SYSTEMS in SERVICE & ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS - ION & SATURN "L" SERIES article.
- Remove spark plugs and inspect for correct heat range, wet plugs, cracks, wear, improper gap, burned electrodes or heavy deposits. Verify the spark plugs are of the correct type.
- Check for proper ignition voltage output using Spark Tester (J 26792).
- An improper spark plug gap will cause a driveability condition. Gap spark plugs using a wire gauge gap tool.
- Determine the cause of the fouling before replacing the spark plugs.
- Check for damaged or misaligned spark plug boots.
- Check the Electronic Ignition (EI) module for proper ground connection.
- Monitor the Misfire Current Counters while driving the vehicle in the conditions that the symptom occurred. If a misfiring cylinder can be located, use DTC P0300 for diagnosis. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L SATURN "L" SERIES article.
