Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement

CAUTION: Refer to SIR Caution .

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
  2. On the back side of the steering wheel are 4 openings; place the wheel so that 2 openings are on top.
  3. Install the J 44298  Driver Air Bag Removal Tool, and pull the handle back toward the steering wheel, away from the steering column, releasing the spring loaded fasteners at the same time. See Special Tools . Repeat the steps for the other 2 openings.
1 Horn Ground Lead
Tip:  Tilt the steering wheel module toward the rear of the vehicle to access the lead and connectors.

Tip:  Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required retention period. Refer to Inflator Module Handling and Scrapping .
