Park pawl control, general
In selector lever position "P", the cone (5) slides between the parking detent (3) and the pilot bushing (6). The park detent (3) is therefore pushed up against the parking pawl gear (2). If the tooth of the park detent (3) on a stationary vehicle does not reach a tooth gap, but reaches a tooth of the park pawl gear (2), then the cone (5) is preloaded by the spring and positioned ready to engage. If the parking lock gear (2) continues to turn, the park detent (3) engages in the next tooth gap. To prevent damage through faulty operation, the intervals between the tooth gaps are such that the park detent (3) can only engage when the vehicle is stationary or crawling at low speed. If the vehicle rolls faster, the park detent (3) is deflected through the tooth bevels thereby preventing it from engaging.
