If a system fault (malfunction) occurs, a built-in fail-safe mechanism within the ECU controls fuel and ignition system functions according to preprogrammed values. This allows the vehicle to be driven, although driving performance is affected.

A self-diagnostic function allows the ECU to store trouble codes in its memory. CHECK ENGINE light informs the driver of system problems. If a system fault occurs, trouble codes which indicate system problems can be retrieved. For further self-diagnostic system information, see SELF DIAGNOSTICS.
