WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Subaru Outback and 2001 Subaru Legacy. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect test harness "F" (98299FC010), connector 1F to connector AB7. See Figure & Figure . Connect air bag resistor (98299PA040) to connector 3F in test harness "F". Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light operates properly, replace driver-side air bag module and go to step 5. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate properly, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 20 seconds. Disconnect test harness "F" from connector AB7. Remove lower cover panel and disconnect connector AB3 from AB8. See Figure. Connect connector 1F in test harness "F" to connector AB8. Connect air bag resistor to connector 3F on test harness "F". Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light operates properly, replace clockspring. See COMBINATION SWITCH-CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate properly, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 20 seconds. Remove air bag resistor from connector 3F in test harness "F". Remove glove box. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connectors AB9 and AB10. See Figure. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB6. Connect connector AB6 to test harness "I2" (98299FC041), connector 1I. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 2I, terminal No. 1 and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 4. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 2I, terminal No. 4 and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace air bag main wiring harness and go to step 5.
- Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 2I, terminals No. 1 and 4, between terminal No. 4 and ground and between terminal No. 1 and ground. If resistance is more than 1 megohm, replace control module and go to step 5. See CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 1 megohm or less, replace air bag main wiring harness and go to step 5.
- Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
