NOTE:
Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect connector AB7 to connector 1F in test harness "F" (98299FC010). See Figure. Connect air bag resistor (98299PA040) to connector 1F in test harness "F". Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light functions properly, replace driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light does not function properly, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Disconnect test harness "F" from connector AB7. Remove instrument panel lower cover and disconnect lower clockspring connectors AB3 and AB8. Connect connector 1F in test harness "F" to connector AB8. Connect air bag resistor to connector 3F in harness "F". Connect battery ground cable and turn ignition switch on. If AIR BAG warning light operates properly, replace clockspring. See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate properly, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait 20 seconds. Remove air bag resistor from connector 3F in test harness "F". Remove glove box and disconnect passenger-side air bag module connectors AB9 and AB10. Disconnect control module connector AB6 and connect to connector 1I in test harness "F". Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on. Measure voltage between connector 2I terminal No. 4 of test harness "I2" (98299FC041) and ground. See Figure. Measure voltage between connector 2I terminal No. 1 of test harness "I2" and ground. If voltage is less than one volt, replace air bag control module and go to next step. See CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If voltage is one volt or more, replace air bag main harness. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
