Engine Assembly: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Remove the striker - front hood. Refer to EXTERIOR BODY PANELS>FRONT HOOD>DISASSEMBLY .
  2. Fully open the front hood. Refer to NOTE>NOTE>FRONT HOOD GAS STAY .
  3. Remove the V-belt covers.

  4. Collect the refrigerant from A/C system. Refer to HVAC SYSTEM (HEATER, VENTILATOR AND A/C)>REFRIGERANT RECOVERY PROCEDURE .
  5. Release the fuel pressure. Refer to FUEL INJECTION (FUEL SYSTEMS) (STI)>FUEL>PROCEDURE>RELEASING OF FUEL PRESSURE .
  6. Remove the battery. Refer to STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS(STI)>BATTERY>REMOVAL .
  7. Open the fuel filler lid and remove the fuel filler cap.
    NOTE: This operation is required to release the inner pressure of the fuel tank.
  8. Remove the air intake duct and air cleaner case (rear). Refer to INTAKE (INDUCTION) (STI)>AIR INTAKE DUCT>REMOVAL . Refer to INTAKE (INDUCTION) (STI)>AIR CLEANER CASE>REMOVAL .
  9. Remove the intercooler. Refer to INTAKE (INDUCTION) (STI)>INTERCOOLER>REMOVAL .
  10. Remove the radiator. Refer to COOLING(STI)>RADIATOR>REMOVAL .
  11. Remove the coolant filler tank. Refer to COOLING(STI)>COOLANT FILLER TANK>REMOVAL .
  12. Disconnect the bulkhead harness connectors from the engine harness connectors.
  13. Lift the claw (A) and remove the engine harness connector from the engine harness bracket.

  14. Disconnect the following connectors and terminals.
    1. Generator connector and terminal

    2. Secondary air pump connector

  15. Disconnect connector (A) from the A/C compressor.
  16. Remove the clip (B) securing the generator cord, and move the generator cord to the left side wheel apron.

  17. Disconnect the following hoses.
    1. A/C pressure hose Refer to HVAC SYSTEM (HEATER, VENTILATOR AND A/C)>HOSE AND PIPE>REMOVAL .
    2. Brake booster vacuum hose (A) and pressure regulator vacuum hose (B)

    3. Heater inlet hose and heater outlet hose

  18. Remove the power steering pump.
    1. Remove the front side belt. Refer to MECHANICAL(STI)>V-BELT>REMOVAL>FRONT SIDE BELT .
    2. Disconnect the connector from power steering pump switch.

    3. Remove the bolt which holds purge control solenoid valve 1 onto intake manifold.

    4. Remove the power steering pump from the engine.

    5. Place the power steering pump on the right side wheel apron.
  19. Remove the center exhaust pipe. Refer to EXHAUST(STI)>CENTER EXHAUST PIPE>REMOVAL .
  20. Remove the turbocharger. Refer to INTAKE (INDUCTION) (STI)>TURBOCHARGER>REMOVAL .
  21. Remove the joint pipe and front exhaust pipe. Refer to EXHAUST(STI)>JOINT PIPE>REMOVAL . Refer to EXHAUST(STI)>FRONT EXHAUST PIPE>REMOVAL .
  22. Disconnect the ground cable on the engine side.

  23. Remove the bolts and nuts which hold the lower side of transmission to the engine.

  24. Remove the nuts which secure the engine mounting to the front crossmember.

  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26. Remove the starter. Refer to STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS(STI)>STARTER>REMOVAL .
  27. Separate the release lever from the release bearing.
    NOTE: This procedure is required to remove engine with the release bearing assembled to the clutch cover.
    1. Remove the operating cylinder from the transmission.
      NOTE: Move the removed operating cylinders to a location that does not interfere operation.

    2. Remove the return spring from the release lever.

    3. Remove the service hole plug using a hexagon wrench.

    4. Attach a 6-mm bolt to the clutch release lever shaft, and pull out the clutch release lever shaft.

    5. Lift the release lever, and remove the release lever from the claw of the release bearing. Pull the release lever to the engine side, and make it so that it moves freely.
  28. Remove the pitching stopper.

  29. Disconnect the fuel delivery hose, fuel return hose and evaporation hose.
    CAUTION:
    • Be careful not to spill fuel.
    • Catch the fuel from hoses using a container or cloth.
    1. Set the ST to the fuel pipe.
      ST 42099AE000 QUICK CONNECTOR RELEASE
    2. Disconnect the quick connector of the fuel delivery hose and fuel return hose by pushing the ST in the direction of the arrow.
    3. Remove the clip and disconnect the evaporation hose from the fuel pipe.

  30. Install the intercooler stay RH No. 2.

    Tightening torque: 

    16 N.m (1.6 kgf-m, 11.8 ft-lb)

  31. Support the engine with a lifting device and wire ropes.

  32. Support the transmission with a garage jack.
    CAUTION: Be sure to perform this procedure to prevent the transmission from lowering by its own weight.

  33. Remove the bolts which hold the upper side of the transmission to the engine.
    CAUTION: Before removing the engine away from transmission, check to be sure no work has been overlooked.

  34. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
    NOTE: Be careful not to damage adjacent parts or body panels with crank pulley, oil level gauge, etc.
    1. Slightly raise the engine.
    2. Raise the transmission with garage jack.
    3. Move the engine horizontally until main shaft is withdrawn from clutch cover.
    4. Slowly move the engine away from engine compartment.
  35. Remove the engine mounting from the engine.
  36. Using a flat tip screwdriver, remove the release bearing from the clutch cover.
