Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If DTC P0463 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0463 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Observe fuel level gauge. Ensure fuel level gauge reads above empty. Add fuel if necessary. Go to next step.
  3. Backprobing, measure voltage between ground and PCM 35-pin connector E61 terminal No. 28 (Blue/White wire). If reading is less than 7.1 volts, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If intermittent problem is not found, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If reading is 7.1-9 volts, go to step  5. If reading is 9-14 volts, go to next step.
  4. Check for short to power in Blue/White wire between fuel level sensor and PCM 35-pin connector E61. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If wire is okay, check fuel level gauge operation. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Repair or replace as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 12-pin fuel level sensor harness connector. See Figure. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between component side of 12-pin fuel level sensor harness connector terminals No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire) and No. 4 (Blue/White wire). See FUEL LEVEL SENSOR RESISTANCE  table. Go to next step.
    FUEL LEVEL SENSOR RESISTANCE

    Fuel Level Ohms
    Empty 90-130
    Half 32.5
    Full 1-10 Or Less
  6. If resistance is as specified, check for open in Blue/White wire between fuel level sensor, fuel level gauge and PCM 35-pin connector E61 terminal No. 28. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Also check for open in Black/Yellow wire between fuel level sensor and ground. If wires are okay, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  7. Check for short or open in Blue/White wire between fuel level sensor, fuel level gauge and PCM 35-pin connector E61 terminal No. 28. Also check for open in Black/Yellow wire between fuel level sensor and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If wires are okay, replace fuel level sensor and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
