Mechanical Inspection: Compression
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1989 Toyota Supra, 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 1989 Toyota Cressida. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Engine mechanical condition can be checked using a compression gauge, vacuum gauge, or an oscilloscope capable of performing a relative compression test. See oscilloscope instruction manual for availability and description of relative compression feature. For procedures and specifications, see D - EFI ADJUSTMENTS article in this section.
CAUTION:
Use remote starter to crank engine during compression test, NOT ignition switch. Fuel injectors are triggered during the cranking mode. This could cause fire hazard, flooding, crankcase contamination, hydrostatic lock-up, or lubrication to be washed off of cylinder walls.
