Mechanical Inspection: Compression

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1989 Toyota Pickup, 1989 Toyota Camry, 1989 Toyota Cab & Chassis, and 1989 Toyota 4Runner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Engine mechanical condition can be checked using a compression gauge, vacuum gauge, or an oscilloscope capable of performing a relative compression test. See oscilloscope instruction manual for availability and description of relative compression feature. For procedures and specifications, see D - EFI ADJUSTMENTS article in this section.

CAUTION: Use remote starter to crank engine during compression test, NOT ignition switch. Fuel injectors are triggered during the cranking mode. This could cause fire hazard, flooding, crankcase contamination, hydrostatic lock-up, or lubrication to be washed off of cylinder walls.
