Bleeding Brake System
CAUTION:
Brake fluid will damage painted surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled on painted surface, wipe off immediately and clean with alcohol. Use only DOT 3 brake fluid from a sealed container. DO NOT mix brake fluid with any other type.
- Brake bleeding procedure for ABS is the same as brake bleeding procedure for non-ABS. If power steering hose is disconnected or actuator is removed, go to next step. If master cylinder has been rebuilt or reservoir is empty, bleed master cylinder first. Bleed wheels in sequence. Start on wheel with longest hydraulic line, and work toward wheel with shortest hydraulic line.
- Fill fluid in power steering reservoir. Start engine. With engine speed less than 1000 RPM, turn steering wheel from side to side against lock 2-3 times.
- Turn engine off. Connect a clear hose to bleeder plug, located on top of steering gear. See Fig 1. Start engine. Turn steering wheel from side to side against lock 2-3 times.
- Set wheels to straight-ahead position. Loosen bleeder plug. Tighten bleeder plug when bubbles no longer appear in clear hose. Power steering fluid level should not rise, and foaming of fluid should not occur. If fluid level rises or foaming occurs, repeat procedure until air is no longer present. Tighten bleeder plug to 71 INCH lbs. (8 N.m).
- Bleed brake system with engine running, then bleed system again with engine off. See step 1). Tighten bleeder screw to 97 INCH lbs. (11 N.m).
- Bleed power steering system again. See steps 2)-4). Turn ignition off. Unplug actuator electrical connector. Unplug ABS relay. Connect Actuator Checker (09990-0150) to actuator and ABS relay, following manufacturer's instructions.CAUTION: Master cylinder may be damaged if these cautions are not followed. DO NOT press power switch for more than 10 seconds. DO NOT press POWER switch without pressing brake pedal. DO NOT release brake pedal while pressing power switch.
- Start engine. Set actuator checker selector switch to AIR BLEED position. See Figure. Press and hold brake pedal firmly. Press power switch for 3 seconds and then release. Repeat this procedure 5 times.
- Release power switch, then release brake pedal. Check brake and power steering fluid. Fill as necessary. Remove actuator checker from vehicle.
