Power Source Circuit

  1. Ensure ignition is off. Note location of transponder key amplifier located near upper steering column bracket. See Figure. Disconnect electrical connector at transponder key amplifier.
  2. Using voltmeter, check voltage between terminals No. 3 (White/Black or White wire) and No. 5 (Black/Red or White wire) at transponder key amplifier electrical connector. See Fig 1. There are 2 different wiring harnesses used. Wire color at designated terminal may vary according to wiring harness used. This is the ground and +B terminals. Voltage should be 9-14 volts. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step. If voltage is within specification, proceed to next item to be inspected. See TROUBLE SHOOTING SYMPTOMS  table under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  3. Remove EFI1 fuse (20-amp) and EFI3 fuse (10-amp) from fuse/relay box at driver's side front corner of engine compartment. See Figure. Check EFI1 and EFI3 fuses. If both fuses are okay, go to next step. If any of these fuses is defective, check for short in wiring harness and electrical connectors connected to the fuse. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . For additional wiring for EFI1 and EFI3 fuses, see POWER DISTRIBUTION article and ENGINE PERFORMANCE article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Replace EFI1 fuse as necessary and repair wiring or electrical connector as necessary.
  4. Check EFI relay operation. See EFI RELAY  under COMPONENT TESTS. If EFI relay is okay, go to next step. If EFI relay is defective, replace EFI relay.
  5. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between ground connection and terminal No. 3 (White/Black or White wire) at transponder key amplifier. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector is defective, repair as necessary.
  6. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between battery, EFI1 fuse, EFI relay, EFI3 fuse and terminal No. 5 (Black/Red or White wire) at transponder key amplifier. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . For additional wiring for EFI1 and EFI3 fuses, and EFI relay, see POWER DISTRIBUTION article and ENGINE PERFORMANCE article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair wiring harness or electrical connector as necessary.
