Section 480 (Engine Immobilizer System - Diagnostics): Pre-Check

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Toyota RAV4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM
    1. Description

The ECM controls the of immobilizer system's functions on this vehicle.

Data of the immobilizer or Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) can be read from the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. When a trouble occurs in immobilizer, Malfunction Indicator Lamp. (MIL) does not turn ON but DTC inspection is performed.

Therefore when there seems to be a trouble with immobilizer, use hand-held tester or SST (diagnosis check wire No. 2) to check and troubleshoot it.

    2. Inspect the DLC3.

The vehicle's ECM uses the ISO 9141-2 for communication. The terminal arrangement of the DLC3 complies with the SAE J1962 and matches the ISO 9141-2 format.

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester connection Condition Specified condition
7 (Bus + line) - 5 (Signal ground) During communication Pulse generation
4 (Chassis ground) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω
5 (Signal ground) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω
      16 (B+) - Body ground Always 9 to 14 V

      HINT:

If your display shows "UNABLE TO CONNECT TO VEHICLE" when you have connected the cable of the hand-held tester to the DLC3, turned the ignition switch ON and operated the hand-held tester, there is a problem on the vehicle side or tool side.

      • If communication is normal when the tester is connected to another vehicle, inspect the DLC3 on the original vehicle.
      • If communication is still impossible when the tester is connected to another vehicle, the problem is probably in the tester itself, so consult the Service Department listed in the tester's instruction manual.
  2. INSPECT DIAGNOSIS
    1. Using hand-held tester:

      Check the DTC.

NOTE: Hand-held tester only:When the diagnosis system is switched from normal mode to check mode, all DTCs and freezed frame data recorded in the normal mode are erased. So before switching modes, always check the DTCs and freezed frame data, and write them down.
      1. Prepare the hand-held tester.

      2. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3 under the instrument panel lower pad.
      3. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the hand-held tester switch ON.
      4. Use the hand-held tester to check the DTCs and freeze frame data; write them down (for operating instructions, see the hand-held tester instruction book).
      5. See page DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART  to confirm the details of the DTCs.
    2. Clear the DTC.

The following operations will erase the DTCs and freeze frame data.

      1. Operating the hand-held tester to erase the codes (see the hand-held tester instruction book for operating instructions).
      2. Disconnecting the battery terminals or EFI1 fuse.
  3. DATA LIST

    HINT:

Using the DATA LIST displayed on the hand-held tester, allows the value of the switch, sensor and actuator to be read, without removing any parts. Reading the DATA LIST as the first step of troubleshooting is one way to shorten the labor time.

    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    3. Read the DATA LIST according to the display on the tester.

  4. ACTIVE TEST

    HINT:

Performing the ACTIVE TEST using the hand-held tester allows the relay, VSV and actuator to be operated without removing any parts. Performing the ACTIVE TEST as a first step of troubleshooting is one way to shorten labor time.

    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    3. Perform the ACTIVE TEST according to the display on the tester.
