On-Vehicle Inspection
- INSPECT SPEEDOMETER
- Check the operation.
- Using a speedometer tester, inspect the speedometer for allowable indication error and check the operation of the odometer.SPEEDOMETER RANGE - REFERENCE: (MPH) (U.S.)
Standard indication Allowable range 20 20 to 23 40 40 to 43.5 60 60 to 64 80 80.0 to 84.5 100 100 to 105 120 120 to 125.5 140 140 to 146 SPEEDOMETER RANGE - REFERENCE: (KM/H) (CANADA)Standard indication Allowable range 20 17.5 to 21.5 40 38 to 42 60 58 to 63 80 78 to 84 100 98.5 to 104.5 120 119 to 125 140 139 to 146 160 159 to 167 180 179 to 188 200 199 to 209 220 219 to 230 NOTE: Tire wear and tire over or under inflation will increase the indication error. - Check the deflection width of the speed meter indicator.
Reference: Below 0.5 km/h (0.3 mph)
- Using a speedometer tester, inspect the speedometer for allowable indication error and check the operation of the odometer.
- Check the operation.
- INSPECT OUTPUT SIGNAL OF VEHICLE SPEED
- Check the input signal wave form.
- Remove the combination meter with connectors still connected.
- Connect the oscilloscope to terminal C11-17 and body ground.
- Start the engine.
- Check the signal wave form according to the condition(s) in the table below.
VEHICLE SPEED OUTPUT SIGNAL CONDITIONItem Condition Tool setting 5 V/DIV, 20 ms/DIV Vehicle condition Driving at approx. 20 km/h (12 mph) OK: As shown in the illustration
HINT: As vehicle speed increases, the cycle of the signal wave form narrows.
- Check the input signal wave form.
- INSPECT TACHOMETER
- Check the operation
- Connect a tune-up test tachometer, and start the engine.NOTE:
- Reversing the connection of the tachometer will damage the transistors and diodes inside.
- When removing or installing the tachometer, be careful not to drop or subject it to heavy shocks.
- Compare the test and tachometer indications.
COMPARISON OF TEST AND TACHOMETER INDICATIONSStandard indication (r/min) Allowable range (r/min) Data in ( ) are for reference 700 630 to 770 1,000 (900 to 1,100) 2,000 (1,850 to 2,150) 3,000 2,800 to 3,200 4,000 (3,800 to 4,200) 5,000 4,800 to 5,200 6,000 (5,750 to 6,250) 7,000 6,700 to 7,300 - Connect a tune-up test tachometer, and start the engine.
- Check the operation
- INSPECT FUEL RECEIVER GAUGE
- Inspect the circuit.
- Disconnect the connector from the sender gauge.
- Turn the ignition switch ON, then check the position of the receiver gauge needle.
OK: Needle position is on (EMPTY).
- Connect terminals 2 and 3 on the wire harness side connector and turn the ignition switch ON, then check the position of the receiver gauge needle.
OK: Needle position is on (FULL).
- Inspect the circuit.
- INSPECT FUEL LEVEL WARNING
- Inspect the circuit.
- Disconnect the connector from the sender gauge.
- Turn the ignition switch ON, check the fuel level needle indicates EMPTY and fuel level warning lights light up.
OK: Fuel level warning light comes on.
- Inspect the circuit.
- INSPECT WATER TEMPERATURE RECEIVER GAUGE
- Inspect the circuit.
- Disconnect the connector from the sender gauge.
- Turn the ignition switch ON, check the position of the water temperature receiver gauge needle.
OK: Needle position is on (COOL)
- Inspect the circuit.
- INSPECT LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT
- Inspect the circuit.
- Disconnect the connector from the low oil pressure switch.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Connect the terminal of wire harness side connector and ground, then check the warning low oil pressure warning light.
OK: Low oil pressure warning light comes on.
- Inspect the circuit.
- INSPECT BRAKE WARNING LIGHT
- Inspect the parking brake warning light.
- Disconnect the connector from the parking brake switch.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Ground the terminal of the wire harness side connector, then check the parking brake warning light.
OK: Brake warning light comes on.
- Inspect the brake fluid level warning light.
- Disconnect the connector from the brake fluid level warning switch.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.

OK: Brake warning light comes on.
- Inspect the parking brake warning light.
- INSPECT BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH
- Remove the reservoir tank cap and strainer.
- Disconnect the connector.
- Measure the resistance between the terminals.
Standard: Float up (switch off): 10 kΩ or higher
- Use a syphon, etc. to take fluid out of the reservoir tank.
- Measure the resistance between the terminals.
Standard: Float down (switch on): Below 1 Ω
- Pour the fluid back in the reservoir tank.
- MAINTENANCE LIQUID RESETTING PROCEDURE MAINTENANCE LIQUID RESETTING INDICATOR CONDITION
State Condition Specified State Blinking The vehicle runs 4,500 miles after the previous setting The indicator blinks for 15 seconds after the ignition switch is on (including 3 seconds for a bulb check). Continuously Illuminated The vehicle runs 5,000 miles after the previous setting The indicator is continuously illuminated after the ignition switch is on. - Set the display window to ODO.
