Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Laser Cruise / Data List.
    5. Check the Data List for proper functioning of the distance control switch.

      ECM (Laser Cruise):

      ECM SPECIFICATION

Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
Car Dist Time Setting Car distance time setting condition/SHORT, MID, LONG, NO Distance selected by distance control switch -

      OK:

Distance selected by the distance control switch is shown on the display.

    NG: Go to step 2

OK : PROCEED TO NEXT CIRCUIT INSPECTION SHOWN IN PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE

  2. INSPECT STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY
    1. Remove the steering pad switch assembly.
    2. Measure the resistance between terminals 4 (DIST) and 6 (ECC) of the steering pad switch assembly connector when the distance control switch is operated.

      Standard resistance

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE

      Switch Position Specified Condition
Distance control switch is ON Below 2.5 Ω
Distance control switch is OFF 100 kΩ or higher

      HINT:

When a malfunction is detected in the distance control switch, replace the steering pad switch assembly.

NG: PROCEED TO NEXT CIRCUIT INSPECTION SHOWN IN PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE

    OK: Go to next step

  3. INSPECT SPIRAL CABLE
NOTE: The spiral cable is an important part of the SRS airbag system. Incorrect removal or installation of the spiral cable may prevent the airbag from deploying.

    HINT:

    1. Remove the spiral cable.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE

Tester Connection Spiral Cable Position Specified Condition
      y1-4 - D15-11 Center Below 1 Ω
      2.5 rotations to the left
      2.5 rotations to the right
      y1-6 - D15-2 Center Below 1 Ω
      2.5 rotations to the left
      2.5 rotations to the right

      HINT:

The spiral cable makes a maximum of approximately 5 rotations.

NG: REPLACE STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY

    OK: Go to next step

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (DISTANCE CONTROL ECU - SPIRAL CABLE)
    1. Disconnect the distance control ECU connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      D15-11 - A20-16 (MODE) Always Below 1 Ω
A20-16 (MODE) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPLACE SPIRAL CABLE
