Inspection Procedure

  1. CHECK FUEL PUMP OPERATION 
    1. Check if there is pressure in the fuel inlet hose.

      HINT:

      If there is fuel pressure, you will hear the sound of fuel flowing.

      NG:  Go to step  5

      OK: Go to Next Step 

  2. INSPECT FUEL PUMP RELAY ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the fuel pump relay from the engine room relay block.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3 - 4 When battery voltage absent Below 1 Ω
      3 - 5 When battery voltage absent 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 4 When battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 5 When battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 Ω
    3. Reinstall the fuel pump relay.

      NG: REPLACE FUEL PUMP RELAY ASSEMBLY

      OK: Go to Next Step 

  3. INSPECT FUEL PUMP RESISTOR (RESISTANCE) 
    1. Inspect the fuel pump resistor resistance.
      1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        1 (Fuel pump resistor) - 2 (Fuel pump resistor) 20°C (68°F) 0.70 to 0.76 Ω

        NG: REPLACE FUEL PUMP RESISTOR  (See PARTS LOCATION )

        OK: Go to Next Step 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (FUEL PUMP RELAY - FUEL PUMP RESISTOR FUEL PUMP) 
    1. Check the harness and connector between the fuel pump relay and fuel pump resistor.
      1. Remove the fuel pump relay from the engine room relay block.
      2. Disconnect the fuel pump resistor connector.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance (Check for Open) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        5 (Fuel pump relay) - F11-1 (Fuel pump resistor) Always Below 1 Ω

        Standard Resistance (Check for Short) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        5 (Fuel pump relay) or F11-1 (Fuel pump resistor) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      4. Reinstall the fuel pump relay.
      5. Reconnect the fuel pump resistor connector
    2. Check the harness and connector between the fuel pump resistor and fuel pump.
      1. Disconnect the fuel pump resistor connector.
      2. Disconnect the fuel pump connector.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance (Check for Open) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        F11-2 (Fuel pump resistor) - F19-4 (Fuel pump) Always Below 1 Ω

        Standard Resistance (Check for Short) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        F11-2 (Fuel pump resistor) or F19-4 (Fuel pump) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      4. Reconnect the fuel pump resistor connector.
      5. Reconnect the fuel pump connector.

        NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

        OK: PROCEED TO NEXT SUSPECTED AREA SHOWN ON PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  (See PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE  )

  5. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain/Engine and ECT/Active Test/Control the Fuel Pump/Speed.
    4. Check whether operating sounds can be heard while operating the relay using the Techstream.

      OK: 

      Operating sounds can be heard from relay. 

      NG:  Go to step  11

      OK: Go to Next Step 

  6. INSPECT ECM POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT 

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  7. INSPECT FUEL PUMP RELAY ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the fuel pump relay from the engine room relay block.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3 - 4 When battery voltage absent Below 1 Ω
      3 - 5 When battery voltage absent 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 4 When battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 5 When battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 Ω
    3. Reinstall the fuel pump relay.

      NG: REPLACE FUEL PUMP RELAY ASSEMBLY

      OK: Go to Next Step 

  8. INSPECT FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the fuel pump resistance.
      1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        4 (+) - 5 (-) 20°C (68°F) 0.2 to 3.0 Ω
    2. Inspect the fuel pump operation.
      1. Apply battery voltage to both terminals. Check that the pump operates.
        CAUTION:
        • These tests must be done quickly (within 10 seconds) to prevent the coil from burning out.
        • Keep the fuel pump as far away from the battery as possible.
        • Always do the switching at the battery side.

        NG: REPLACE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )

        OK: Go to Next Step 

  9. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (FUEL PUMP - FUEL PUMP RELAY, FUEL PUMP BODY GROUND) 
    1. Check the harness and connector between the fuel pump and fuel pump relay.
      1. Disconnect the fuel pump connector.
      2. Remove the fuel pump relay from the engine room relay block.
      3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance (Check for Open) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        F19-4 (Fuel pump) - 4 (Fuel pump relay) Always Below 1 Ω

        Standard Resistance (Check for Short) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        F19-4 (Fuel pump) or 4 (Fuel pump relay) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      4. Reconnect the fuel pump connector.
      5. Reinstall the fuel pump relay.
    2. Check the harness and connector between the fuel pump and body ground.
      1. Disconnect the fuel pump connector.
      2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard Resistance (Check for Open) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
        F19-5 (Fuel pump) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω
      3. Reconnect the fuel pump connector.

        NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

        OK: Go to Next Step 

  10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY - FUEL PUMP RELAY) 
    1. Remove the circuit opening relay from the engine room relay block.
    2. Remove the fuel pump relay from the engine room relay block.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open) 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3 (Circuit opening relay) - 3 (Fuel pump relay) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short) 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3 (Circuit opening relay) or 3 (Fuel pump relay) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reinstall the circuit opening relay.
    5. Reinstall the fuel pump relay.

      NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

      OK: CHECK AND REPAIR HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (EFI RELAY - CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY) 

  11. INSPECT CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY 
    1. Remove the circuit opening relay from the engine room relay block.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3 - 5 When battery voltage absent 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 5 When battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 Ω
    3. Reinstall the circuit opening relay.

      NG: REPLACE CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY

      OK: Go to Next Step 

  12. INSPECT ECM (FC VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage 

      STANDARD VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      E13-3 (FC) - E11-12 (E1) Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V

      NG: CHECK AND REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ECM - CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY - IGNITION)

      OK: REPLACE ECM  (See ECM  )
