Shift-Lock System: Inspection: Procedure

  1. INSPECT SHIFT-LOCK SYSTEM 
    1. Switch the ignition ON (engine off).
    2. Shift the selector lever to the P position
    3. Verify that push button cannot be pressed in and the selector lever cannot be shifted from the P to R position when the brake pedal is not depressed.
      • If it can be verified, go to the next step.
      • If not as verified, inspect the following parts:
        • Shift-lock solenoid

          See step  2

        • Park/Neutral position switch

          See step  4

        • Brake switch

          Refer to INSPECTION

        • Engine stop and start ECU

          Refer to INSPECTION

        • ECM

          Refer to INSPECTION

    4. Verify that the selector lever can be shifted from P to R position while the push button is pressed with brake pedal depressed.
      • If it can be verified, go to the next step.
      • If not as verified, inspect the following parts:
  2. INSPECT SHIFT-LOCK SOLENOID 

    HINT: 

    The shift-lock solenoid is built into the selector lever component.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

      Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

    2. Perform the following procedure to remove the selector lever knob.

      HINT: 

      If the servicing is difficult, release the shift lock manually and shift the selector lever to the N position.

      1. Insert the tool (width: 4 mm (0.2 in.) or less, thickness: 1 mm (0.04 in.) or less) as shown in the figure.

      2. Move the tool in the direction of arrow (1) in the figure and detach the hook. Move the lock release button cover in the direction of arrow (2) in the figure and remove it.

      3. Remove the spring.

    3. Remove the following parts:
      1. Center console tray

        Refer to REMOVAL

      2. Shift bezel

        Refer to REMOVAL

      3. Upper panel

        Refer to REMOVAL

      4. Shift panel

        Refer to REMOVAL

      5. Console side panel

        Refer to REMOVAL

      6. Front console box

        Refer to REMOVAL

      7. CD player (with CD player)

        Refer to REMOVAL

      8. Front console

        Refer to REMOVAL

      9. Side wall

        Refer to REMOVAL

      10. Rear console

        Refer to REMOVAL

    4. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

      Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

    5. Verify that the voltages of each of the selector lever component terminals are as indicated in the table.

      SHIFT-LOCK SOLENOID SPECIFICATION

      Terminal Connected to Test condition Voltage (V)
      1 IG1 relay Ignition switched ON (engine on) B+
      Except above Below 1.0
      6 Engine stop and start ECU Under any condition Below 1.0
      • If the voltage is not as indicated in the table, repair or replace the related wiring harness.
      • If the voltage can be verified as indicated in the table, replace the selector lever component.

        Refer to REMOVAL

  3. INSPECT SHIFT-LOCK OVERRIDE BUTTON 
    1. Switch the ignition off.
    2. Verify that the selector lever is in the P position.
    3. Without the brake pedal depressed, verify that the selector lever cannot be shifted from the P position.
    4. Remove the shift-lock override cover using a tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver.

    5. Insert the flathead screwdriver and press the shift-lock override button.
    6. Verify that the selector lever can be shifted from the P position.
      • If not as verified, replace the selector lever.

        Refer to REMOVAL

  4. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH 

    HINT: 

    The Park/Neutral position switch is built into the selector lever component.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

      Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

    2. Perform the following procedure to remove the selector lever knob.

      HINT: 

      If the servicing is difficult, release the shift lock manually and shift the selector lever to the N position.

      1. Insert the tool (width: 4 mm (0.2 in.) or less, thickness: 1 mm (0.04 in.) or less) as shown in the figure.

      2. Move the tool in the direction of arrow (1) in the figure and detach the hook. Move the lock release button cover in the direction of arrow (2) in the figure and remove it.

      3. Remove the spring.

    3. Remove the following parts:
      1. Center console tray

        Refer to REMOVAL

      2. Shift bezel

        Refer to REMOVAL

      3. Upper panel

        Refer to REMOVAL

      4. Shift panel

        Refer to REMOVAL

      5. Console side panel

        Refer to REMOVAL

      6. Front console box

        Refer to REMOVAL

      7. CD player (with CD player)

        Refer to REMOVAL

      8. Front console

        Refer to REMOVAL

      9. Side wall

        Refer to REMOVAL

      10. Rear console

        Refer to REMOVAL

    4. Disconnect the selector lever component connector.

      *a Selector Lever Component Connector
    5. Verify that the continuity between selector lever component terminals 4 and 5.
      • If not as verified, replace the selector lever component.
