Expansion Tank Removal And Installation/Replacement

Mobile Repair Possible:  No

WARNING: Hot surface 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in severe injuries due to burns or scalds.
  • Do not commence work until components/liquids have sufficiently cooled down.
  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE).
NOTE: Contamination 
Contamination or moisture entering the cooling system can lead to malfunction or functional failure.
The vehicle cooling system and any removed components should be capped/sealed during work to prevent contamination entry.

Removal Procedure: 

  1. Remove the underbody front air shield. Refer to UNDERBODY FRONT AIR SHIELD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  2. Remove the front trunk. Refer to FRONT TRUNK REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT

  3. Remove the lid (1).
  4. Extract coolant with a conventional pump.

  5. Unlock and detach the coolant pipe (1).
    NOTE: Environmental Risk
    • Collect and dispose of leaking liquids.
    • Observe country-specific disposal regulations.

  6. Clamp off the coolant pipe as indicated (1).

    Removal note: Only clamp off flexible hose pipes. Use conventional clamping tools to clamp the pipes. 

  7. Unlock and disconnect the coolant pipe (2).
    NOTE: Environmental Risk
    • Collect and dispose of leaking liquids.
    • Observe country-specific disposal regulations.

  8. Remove 3 bolts (1).

    Torque: 8 Nm 

  9. Unlock and disconnect electrical connector (2).
  10. Unthread and remove the cooling system expansion tank (3) upwards.

Installation Procedure: 

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure, noting the following.

    All fasteners must be tightened to torque specification! 

  2. Install the front trunk. Refer to FRONT TRUNK REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  3. Install the underbody front air shield. Refer to UNDERBODY FRONT AIR SHIELD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  4. Check coolant level and top up if necessary.
