Use only gold-plated terminals when servicing any component with gold-plated electrical harness connector terminals.
For wiring diagrams, component locations, and connector views, Refer to the applicable wiring diagram.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Multimeter
- Wiring diagram
Test requirements
- A/C switched off
- All electrical consumers switched off
- Battery voltage at least 12.5 volts
- Engine control module fuses OK
- Ground connections between engine / transmission / chassis OK
- Ignition switched off
- Vehicles with automatic transmission, shift selector lever in park or neutral
Test procedure
-- Perform a preliminary check to verify the customers complaint. Refer to PRELIMINARY CHECK
Start diagnosis
Make sure the engine is at room temperature or Colder.
-- Disconnect the Automatic Glow Time Control Module -J179- connector. Refer to applicable wiring diagram for relay location and number.
Checking voltage
-- Switch the ignition On.
-- Using a Multimeter measure the voltages of the Automatic Glow Time Control Module -J179- connector.

If the specified value was Not obtained:
-- Check the wiring connection for an open circuit, short circuit to Battery positive or Ground
-- Check the wiring connection for damage, corrosion, loose or broken terminals.
-- If necessary, repair the faulty wiring connection and replace any open fuses.

If the specified value was obtained:
-- Go to Glow Plug, Checking Automatic Glow Time Control Module -J179- AND GLOW PLUG, CHECKING => Glow Plugs, Checking

Checking Activation
-- Remove the engine control module Engine Control Module (ECM) - J623 -. Refer to the service information for removal and installation procedures.
-- Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the circuit between the Automatic Glow Time Control Module -J179- and the engine control module Engine Control Module (ECM) - J623 -. Refer to the applicable wiring diagram.

Specified value: 1.5 Ω Max.
If the specification was not obtained:
-- Check the wires for a short circuit to each other, a short to battery voltage, and a short to ground.
-- Check the electrical harness connector for damage, corrosion, loose or broken terminals.
-- Repair as necessary.

If the specified value was obtained:
-- Replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) - J623 - Refer to appropriate service information..
-- Go to Final procedures
Glow Plugs, Checking
-- Reconnect the Automatic Glow Time Control Module -J179- and the Engine Control Module -J623- making sure all connection are secure before continuing Diagnosis.
-- Disconnect the T14 connector. Refer to applicable wiring diagram.
The Glow plug terminal/connector is not repairable. The harness must be replaced if damaged.
-- Using a multimeter, check the resistance of the glow plug These are identified as Q10, Q11. Q12, Q13 connector terminal to engine ground.

If the specification was not obtained:
-- Check the glow plug or circuit for a short to voltage, open circuit or high resistance.
-- Replace the malfunctioning Glow Plug --.
If the specified value was obtained:
Checking wiring
-- Using a Multimeter, Check the following Automatic Glow Time Control Module -J179- glow plug output voltage at T14 electrical harness connector terminals for Voltage, Refer to applicable wiring diagram for fuse location and number.
Ignition switched ON.

If the specification was not obtained:
-- Check the glow plug or circuit for a short to voltage, open circuit or high resistance.

If the specified value was obtained:
-- Check the wires for a short circuit to each other, a short to battery voltage, and a short to ground.
-- Check the electrical harness connector for damage, corrosion, loose or broken terminals.
-- Repair as necessary.

Final procedures
After repair work, the following work steps must be performed in the following sequence:
- Check the DTC memory. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC MODE 03 - READ DTC MEMORY .
- If necessary, erase the DTC memory. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC MODE 04 - ERASE DTC MEMORY .
- If the DTC memory was erased, generate readiness code. Refer to READINESS CODE .
