ATF Level, Checking: Notes
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit :SMN372500
- Original 1 liter ATF container
- Protective Eyewear
- Acid-Resistant Safety Gloves
Note the following information:
- If filling the ATF, only use ATF that is available as a replacement part. Refer to the Electronic Parts Information (ETKA).
- Always follow the guidelines for clean working conditions. Refer to GUIDELINES FOR CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
Requirements
- The vehicle is level and all hoist mounts are the same height.
- Noise insulation removed.
- The Vehicle diagnostic tester is connected.
Checking
-- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester and identify the vehicle in Guided Functions .
- 0002 - 8-Speed Automatic Transmission 09H
- 0002 - Transmission electronics functions
- 0002 - Fluid level, checking
- Let the transmission cool down if the fluid temperature is higher than 40 °C (104 °F).
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the transmission.
-- Remove the ATF fill plug -arrow- from the transmission -1-.
- Make sure that no dust or foreign objects can enter the fill hole.
-- Add 0.5 liters ATF SP-IV M1.
-- Attach the connector -1- to the transmission.
-- Start the engine.
- The engine is idling and the selector lever is in "P".
-- While pressing the brake pedal, move through the selector lever positions in the sequence shown below.
- "P" into "R"
- "R" into "D"
- "D" into "R"
- "R" into "P"
- Each position must remain engaged for at least 2 seconds.
-- Repeat this procedure and move the selector lever to "P".
-- Lift the vehicle and remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit :SMN372500 under the transmission near the ATF check plug.
Risk of injury to the eyes and hands due to escaping hot transmission fluid.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.
The recommended oil temperature of the automatic transmission should be in between 20°C and 30°C (ambient temperature).
- The oil temperature of the automatic transmission must be below 35°C (95°F)
-- Before the oil temperature has reached 40±5°C (104°F±41°F), remove the ATF check plug -arrow- from the transmission housing -1-.
-- If ATF is leaking, check the temperature, until it reaches 40±5°C (1.04±41°F).
-- If the temperature has reached 40±5°C (104±41°F) and ATF is flowing out in a thin, constant stream (it starts to drip), then the procedure is finished.
-- Install the ATF check plug with a new seal to the tightening specification.
-- Install the ATF fill plug -arrow- with a new seal to the tightening specification.
-- Attach the connector -1- to the transmission.
If no ATF drains, ATF must be added.
Too little or too much fluid will impair the function of the transmission.
