Abs Control Module -J104-/Abs Hydraulic Unit -N55-, Removing And Installing, LHD: Removing
The ABS Control Module -J104- will be called the control module in the information that follows.
ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55- will be subsequently called hydraulic unit.
If the control module is replaced, the test plan to replace the control module must be performed.
-- Perform the "control module, replacing" function using the Vehicle diagnostic tester . Refer to Diagnostic Entries .

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
Vehicles with Gasoline Engine (1.5L, 1.8L and 2.0L)
-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Vehicles with diesel engine
-- Remove the emissions control module. Refer to the appropriate service information .

Hybrid vehicles
-- Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, FWD , or CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, AWD .

Vehicles with inserted plastic heat shield
-- Clip the heat shield -1- in the -direction of the arrow A- out of the bracket -2-.
-- Remove the heat shield -1- in the -direction of the arrow B-.
Continuation for all vehicles
Vehicles with screwed on metal heat shield
-- Remove the nuts -2-.
-- Remove the heat shield -1-.
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Push the lock washer -2- in the -direction of arrow B-.
-- Release the connector -1- in the -direction of the arrow A-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1-.
-- Attach the bleed hose -2- for the first bleeder bottle to the breather valve -1- for the left front brake caliper -1-.
-- Open the breather valve.
-- Attach the second bleeder bottle bleeder hose -2- to the left rear brake caliper bleed valve -1-.
-- Open the breather valve.
-- Push the brake pedal at least 60 mm using the Brake Pedal Actuator :V.A.G 1869/2 .
-- Close the left front and left rear bleeder valves.
-- Do not remove the Brake Pedal Actuator :V.A.G 1869/2 .
Risk of destroying the brake lines by bending.
- Never forcefully bend the brake lines in the hydraulic unit area.
-- Unclip the cover from the bulkhead and unclip from the brake lines.
Risk of damaging due to brake fluid leaking out.
Malfunctions of the electrical components possible due to corrosion.
- Make sure no brake fluid gets on the contacts.
- Place sufficient lint-free cleaning cloths in the area of the connectors.
-- Mark the brake lines.
-- Remove the union bolts -1- through -6-.
-- Seal off the threaded holes and brake lines with suitable plugs from the Engine Bung Set :VAS 6122 and Sealing Plug Supplement Set :VAS 6122/1 .
-- Remove the hydraulic unit and control module -1- with the bracket -3- and rubber bushing -4- in the -direction of the arrow-.
Vehicles with gasoline engine (2.0L)
-- Remove the right drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
-- Remove the heat shield -1-.
-- Remove the hydraulic unit and control module downward.
