Transmission Fluid Level, Checking: Notes

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Conditions

Transmission Fluid Temperature, Reading

Tip

The transmission fluid level changes with the transmission fluid temperature. Too low of a transmission fluid temperature leads to too high of an oil level. Too high of a transmission fluid temperature leads to too low of an oil level.

If the transmission fluid level is not correct, then the function of the transmission is impaired.

To begin working, the transmission fluid temperature should not be higher than 30 °C (86 °F). Let the transmission cool down first.

Conditions

-- Perform the "Transmission Fluid Level, checking" function using the Vehicle diagnostic tester . Refer to DIAGNOSTIC ENTRY .

Preparation Procedures

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit :SMN3725  underneath.

CAUTION:

Risk of injury due to fluid escaping.

Irritation and injury to the skin and eyes are possible.

- Wear protective eyewear.

- Wear safety gloves.

-- Remove the plug -1-.

-- Check whether the overflow pipe is securely installed in the plug hole.

Tip

Some transmission fluid always leaks out when opening the transmission fluid plug, regardless of the transmission fluid level.

Oil Level, Checking

If some transmission fluid is still leaking at a transmission fluid temperature in between 35 °C and 45 °C (95 °F and 113 °F), then the transmission fluid level is correct.

Tip

Due to cooling fluid impulses for the multi-plate clutch and depending on the transmission fluid level, a small amount of transmission fluid is leaking from the overflow pipe every 30 seconds. For the transmission fluid level check, a small amount of transmission fluid is not of concern.

-- Perform final procedures. Refer to Final Procedures .

If no transmission fluid is leaking from the overflow pipe at a transmission fluid temperature in between 35 °C (95 °F) and 45 °C:

-- Fill the transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid, Draining and Filling  .
