Transaxle Disassembly
- Fit transmission in work stand and drain lubricant. Disconnect wires at overdrive solinoid, remove back-up light switch and overdrive switch. Remove transmission top cover and lift out detent spring and ball. Remove selector plate assembly, return spring, gasket, glide washers and shifter lock pin. See Fig 1

- Remove overdrive retaining nuts from intermediate flange and remove overdrive. Remove gearshift carrier assembly. Remove sleeve over gearshift rod joint and knock out rear pin. Turn rod, knock out front pin and remove rod. Unbolt intermediate housing from transmission and remove with gasket and shims. See Fig 2

- Remove selector rail, shifter and shift forks. Remove lock ring and pull off overdrive oil pump eccentric. Catch and retain drive key. Remove lock ring and spacer ring for main shaft bearing.
- Place adapter between input shaft and front synchronizer ring. Using puller and adapters as required, pull off mainshaft bearing and remove thrust washer. See Fig 3

- Remove clutch fork, bell housing, gasket and shims. On cast iron models, remove intermediate shaft rear bearing race by tapping shaft back until race is free, then tap forward until front race can be removed. On aluminum housing models, tap shaft back only enough to install puller, and remove races.
- On all transmissions, pull out input shaft, then remove 4th gear synchronizer ring. Lift out mainshaft, intermediate shaft, and reverse gear and shaft. It may be necessary to tap reverse gear shaft back for removal.
- Remove reverse gear shift fork and seal for selector rail. Using puller, remove intermediate shaft bearings. Remove rubber ring from gearshift rod joint and gearshift rod bushings. Remove bell housing seal.
