Disabling Ignition System

Disable ignition system to prevent engine from starting and prevent discharge of high voltage while working on ignition system.

Disconnect wire from terminal 1 (-) on ignition coil and tape wire end to insulate from making contact with engine components.

NO SPARK OR WEAK SPARK TROUBLESHOOTING CHART

Probable Cause Corrective Action
Wet or damp distributor cap or plug wires Remove cap and wires. Dry and reinstall.
Faulty wires or connectors (primary circuit) Test and replace as necessary.
Weak or faulty coil Test and replace as necessary.
Defective spark plug wires Test and replace as necessary.
Worn or fouled spark plugs Replace spark plugs.
Faulty Hall sender or impulse sender Test and replace as needed.
Faulty ignition control unit or power stage Test and replace as needed.
