Design And Function
PREPARATORY WORK
Only use the jacking points when jacking up the vehicle.
- Standard jacking points
- Support jacking points
- Fuel tank
VEHICLE LIFT WORK
When working with objects on the car lift there is always a risk of the centre of gravity shifting.
SCISSOR LIFT
Location
When the scissor lift is used, the lifting surface must be rubber coated.
Use an underlay.
The image shows how the lifting surface is to be positioned so as not to damage the fuel tank.
To prevent damaging the fuel tank, position the lifting surface in front of the fuel tank.
- Standard jacking points
- Support jacking points
- Fuel tank
SITUATIONS WHERE A SCISSOR LIFT CANNOT BE USED
The car may have its centre of gravity behind the support jacking points. Therefore, a scissor lift cannot be used for work that means that the centre of gravity will shift backwards, e.g. if the engine needs lifting out of the vehicle.
For work that affects the centre of gravity, instead use a 2 post lift or in ground lift.
- Standard jacking points
- Support jacking points
- Normal centre of gravity
- Centre of gravity on cars where the powertrain is lifted out of the vehicle
The image illustrates why only the vehicle's standard jacking points (1) may be used for removal work that affects the centre of gravity.
VEHICLE LIFT
- Follow the vehicle lift directions and instructions
- Extra caution must be observed regarding lift capacity restrictions for shifted centre of gravity
- Always check that the vehicle is stable before lifting
- When working on vehicle lifts, always perform a risk assessment before starting work
