Cruise Control Systems: Description

WARNING: Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
CAUTION: Before disconnecting battery, obtain anti-theft code for radio. After battery is reconnected, the word CODE will appear on radio display. Enter 5-digit anti-theft code using select buttons and radio will begin working. If code is entered wrong too many times, leave radio on at least one hour and enter code correctly. Any time radio power is lost, pre-selected radio stations will have to be reset.

Cruise control unit receives command signals from cruise control main switch and SET/RESUME/CANCEL switch. Vehicle operating signals are also received from brake switch, Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), and A/T gear position switch. Cruise control unit sends control signals to cruise control actuator, which regulates throttle position to maintain selected vehicle speed.

Cruise control unit compares actual vehicle speed to selected speed. Cruise control unit will open or close throttle to change and maintain vehicle speed. When cruise control unit receives a disengage signal, cruise control actuator will allow throttle to close. A signal from brake switch disengages system when brakes are applied. A/T gear position switch or cancel switch can also send disengage signals to cruise control unit. See Figure, Figure and Figure .

Cruise control actuator on 3.2TL is electrically operated with a magnetic safety clutch. Cruise control actuator on 3.5RL is vacuum operated and has electrically operated vacuum control valves.
