Test G: Remote Keyless Entry System Inoperative

  1. If remote keyless entry system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If remote keyless entry system diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Press each button on RKE transmitter one at a time. If remote keyless entry system does not properly, go to next step. If remote keyless entry system operates properly, problem may be intermittent. Check for intermittent or poor connections. Go to DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - MONTANA, SILHOUETTE & VENTURE article.
  3. Using power door lock switches, lock and unlock all doors. If power door locks operate properly, go to next step. If power door locks do not operate properly, perform DOORS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  4. Using power sliding door on/off switch in the overhead console, operate power sliding doors. If both power sliding doors operate properly, go to next step. If both power sliding doors do not operate properly, perform DOORS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  5. If power sliding door is not the only inoperative remote keyless entry function, go to next step. If power sliding door is the only inoperative remote keyless entry function, diagnose and repair power sliding door fault. Go to POWER SLIDING SIDE DOORS - MONTANA, SILHOUETTE & VENTURE article.
  6. NOTE: Ensure RKE transmitter is the correct model for the vehicle remote system. A wrong model transmitter may pass this test, but will not activate the vehicle remote system.
  7. Using Keyless Entry Tester (J-43241), press each button on RKE transmitter(s). If tone does not sound and Green light does not illuminate on tester after each button is pressed, go to next step. If tone sounds and Green light illuminates on tester after each button is pressed, go to step  11 .
  8. If no buttons on RKE transmitter sound tone and illuminate Green light on tester when pressed, go to next step. If any buttons on RKE transmitter sound tone and illuminate Green light on tester when pressed, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace RKE transmitter battery. After battery replacement, go to next step.
  10. Place RKE transmitter with new batteries on keyless entry tester. Press each button on RKE transmitter. If tone does not sound and Green light does not illuminate on tester after each button is pressed, go to next step. If tone sounds and Green light illuminates on tester after each button is pressed, go to step  11 .
  11. Replace inoperative RKE transmitter. Go to step  13 .
  12. Perform TRANSMITTER SYNCHRONIZATION  under PROGRAMMING. If horn chirps to confirm synchronization has been completed, go to next step. If horn does not chirp to confirm synchronization has been completed, go to step  13 .
  13. Operate RKE transmitter within range of vehicle. If all remote keyless entry functions do not operate properly, go to next step. If all remote keyless entry functions operate properly, go to step  26 .
  14. NOTE: All RKE transmitters which are to be recognized by the remote control door lock receiver must be programmed in a single programming sequence. If system is placed in program mode it will erase all previously programmed RKE transmitters upon receipt of the programming signal from first RKE transmitter.
  15. Perform programming procedure. Go to REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING  under PROGRAMMING. If BCM does not chime to confirm RKE transmitter programming is completed, go to next step. If BCM chimes to confirm RKEtransmitter programming is completed, go to step  26 .
  16. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect RCDLR Black 6-pin harness connector. RCDLR is located behind center of dash, near defrost vent. See Figure . Connect a test light between ground and RCDLR harness connector terminal No. 5 (Orange wire). See Figure . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  21 .
  17. Connect test light between RCDLR harness connector terminals No. 5 (Orange wire) and No. 8 (Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  22 .
  18. Disconnect test light. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between RCDLR harness connector terminals No. 6 (Black/White wire) and No. 8 (Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  18 .
  19. Connect test light between ground and RCDLR harness connector terminal No. 6 (Black/White wire). If test light does not illuminate, go to step  19 . If test light illuminates, go to step  23 .
  20. Check for high resistance, open or short to ground in Black/White wire between RCDLR harness connector terminal No. 6 and BCM harness connector C2 terminal C8. If Black/White wire is okay, go to step  20 . If Black/White wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  26 .
  21. Check RCDLR connector for damage and intermittent or poor terminal contact. If connector and terminal contact is okay, go to step  24 . If connector or terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  26 .
  22. Check BCM connector C2 for damage and intermittent or poor terminal contact. If connector and terminal contact is okay, go to step  25 . If connector or terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  26 .
  23. Repair high resistance, open or short to ground in Orange wire between underhood junction block and RCDLR harness connector terminal No. 5 as necessary. After repair, go to step  26 .
  24. Repair high resistance in Black wire between ground and RCDLR harness connector terminal No. 8 as necessary. After repair, go to step  26 .
  25. Repair short to voltage in Black/White wire between RCDLR harness connector terminal No. 6 and BCM harness connector C2 terminal C8 as necessary. After repair, go to step  26 .
  26. Replace RCDLR. See REMOTE CONTROL DOOR LOCK RECEIVER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  27. Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  28. Operate system to verify repair. If fault still exists, go to step  3 .
