Test 1A - Testing System Function

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  and WIRING DIAGRAM  .
NOTE: Perform visual inspection of connectors (checking, cleaning and repairing as necessary) before proceeding with TEST 1A.
  1. Connect DRB to CCD Data Link connector, located under dash to the right of steering column. See Fig 1 . If DRB is blank, refer to the TESTS W/CODES - BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If DRB is not blank, go to next step.
  2. If the DRB does not display SELECT SYSTEM, proceed to the TESTS W/CODES - BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If DRB displays SELECT SYSTEM, select VTA MODULE and go to next step.
  3. If DRB displays NO RESPONSE, go to TEST 2A  . If DRB does not display NO RESPONSE, disconnect illuminated entry relay. Locate illuminated entry relay in relay center located under glove box. See Fig 2 . Remove 3 relay center cover screws from front of glove box and remove relay center cover. Ensure all doors, hood and liftgate are closed and go to next step.

  4. If security alarm indicator light flashes continuously, go to TEST 3A  . If security alarm indicator light does not flash continuously, change DRB status from VTA status to DIAGNOSTIC status and go to next step.
  5. If DRB does not display TURN KEY TO ACC. POSITION, go to TEST 4A  . If DRB displays TURN KEY TO ACC. POSITION, turn ignition key to ACC position and go to next step.
  6. If DRB displays NO RESPONSE, go to TEST 5A  . If DRB does not display NO RESPONSE and horn does not sound, go to TEST 6A  . If DRB does not display NO RESPONSE and horn sounds, check security indicator light and go to next step.
  7. If indicator light is not flashing, go to TEST 7A  . If security alarm indicator light is flashing, and headlights and parking lights are not flashing, go to TEST 8A  . If security alarm indicator light, headlights and parking lights are flashing, turn ignition off and go to next step.
    NOTE: In steps 8) - 14), wait at least 30 seconds between opening and closing doors, hood, and liftgate.
  8. Open left front door. Close left front door. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 9A  . If horn sounds, open right front door. Close right front door. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 9A  . If horn sounds, open right rear door. Close right rear door. If horn sounds, open left rear door. Close left rear door. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 9A  .
  9. If horn sounds, open hood. Close hood. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 10A  . If horn sounds, open liftgate. Close liftgate. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 11A  . If horn sounds, push power door lock switch to LOCK position and go to next step.
  10. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 12A  . If horn sounds, push power door lock switch to UNLOCK position. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 13A  . If horn sounds, rotate key in left front door lock to UNLOCK position. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 14A  .
  11. If horn sounds, rotate key in right front door lock to UNLOCK position. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 15A  . If horn sounds, rotate key in liftgate to UNLOCK position. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 16A  .
  12. If horn sounds, turn ignition on. If horn does not sound, go to TEST 4A  . If horn sounds, using DRB, read vehicle theft alarm status. If DRB does not display CURRENT MODE DISARMED, go to TEST 1B  . If DRB displays CURRENT MODE DISARMED, DRB should then display ENGINE CONTROLLER: 1) NO RESPONSE, 2) NO RESPONSE?. If message displays, go to TEST 17A  . If message does not display, go to next step.
  13. If DRB displays CURRENT MODE DISARMED, and then displays ENGINE CONTROLLER: 1) OK TO ARM VTA, 2) OK TO RUN ENG?, determine if system malfunction is caused by keyless entry, arm or disarm function. If malfunction is not caused by keyless entry, go to next step. If malfunction is caused by keyless entry, go to TEST 18A  . If ENGINE CONTROLLER: 1) OK TO ARM VTA, 2) OK TO RUN ENG? message is not displayed, replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Perform TEST VER-1  .
  14. If keyless entry is working properly, determine if engine controller has been replaced within the last 20 engine starts. If engine controller has not been replaced, system is functioning properly. Perform TEST VER-1  . Engine has to cycle through 20 ignition starts before VTA becomes operational (assembly plant alarm override feature).
