Fuel Gauge Not Operating Properly

NOTE: Ensure communication can be established with Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC), Body Control Module (BCM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) before performing test procedure.
  1. Turn ignition off. Press and hold TRIP/RESET button on instrument panel. Turn ignition on. MIC self-test will start. During MIC self-test, all gauges should move from minimum position to full scale and back to minimum position. If all gauges pass self-test, go to next step. If fuel gauge fails self-test, replace defective fuel gauge pack. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If all gauges fail self-test, replace instrument cluster printed circuit board. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  2. Using scan tool, read ENGINE DTCs. If no PCM DTCs are present, go to next step. If any PCM DTCs are present, go to SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - GRAND CHEROKEE article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Remove fuel pump module from fuel tank. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Using DVOM, measure resistance between fuel pump module terminals No. 3 (Light Blue/Yellow wire) and 4 (Black/Dark Green wire). Move float up and down and note readings. When float is up, resistance should be approximately 20 ohms. When float is down, resistance should be about 250 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, replace fuel level sending unit. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is as specified, check wiring between fuel pump module, ground and PCM. Repair as necessary. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
