3.2 Liter

WARNING:

Hoisting and jack lift points provided in this service information are for a complete vehicle. When the transaxle is removed, the center of gravity will shift to the rear of the vehicle, possibly creating an unstable condition. Place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicle. Personal injury may result if safety stands are not used.

NOTE:

If installing a new transmission, remove the shipping cap from the vent.

  1. Install the torque converter to the transmission.
  2. While guiding the transmission past obstacles, jack the transmission upward until the engine and the transmission are in line.
  3. Push the bell housing against the engine block until the guide pins engage.
    CAUTION:

    Ensure that the transaxle bell housing and the engine block are flush before installing the bolts. Never utilize the mounting bolts to draw the transaxle to the engine.

  4. Install the bolt to hold the engine oil pan and exhaust bracket to the bellhousing and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  5. Install the bolts (1) to hold the engine block and oil pan to the bellhousing behind the catalytic converter and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Install the bolts to hold the engine block and oil pan to the bellhousing next to the differential housing and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Install the left lower load beam. Refer to LOAD BEAM, LOWER, INSTALLATION .
  8. Install the rear engine mount isolator. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, INSTALLATION .

  9. Place a wooden block (1) between the load beam and the transmission, lower the jack and high stand until the transmission rests on the wooden block.
  10. Remove the high stand and transmission jack from under the vehicle.

    CAUTION:

    It is essential that correct length bolts be used to attach the converter to the driveplate. Failure to follow this caution may result in transmission damage.

  11. Through the access door opening, install the bolts (1) that hold the flexplate to the torque converter and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Rotate the crankshaft to bring each set of bolts into view through the access door.

  12. Install the access door (2) in the splash shield on the bellhousing.

  13. Install the starter bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  14. Guide the cooler lines in position on the transmission.
  15. Engage the quick couplings (1) to hold the cooler lines to the transmission.
  16. If equipped, install the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Refer to INSTALLATION .
  17. Install the left and right halfshafts. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  18. Remove the safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle and lower the vehicle.

  19. Install upper bolts (1) to hold the transmission bellhousing to the engine block located behind the main engine wire harness and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  20. Install the upper bolt (1) to hold the wire harness bracket and transmission bellhousing to the engine block and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  21. Place the transmission mount adaptor block (4) in position on the transmission.
  22. Install the bolts (3) and hidden bolts (2) to hold the transmission mount adaptor block (4) to the transmission and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  23. Place the ground cable (1) in position on the transmission.
  24. Install the bolt (1) to hold the ground cable to the transmission end cover and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  25. Position a floor jack under the transmission.
  26. Raise the transmission until the wood block is free to be removed.

  27. Remove the wooden block (1) from between the transmission end cover and the frame rail load beam.

  28. Install the bolts (1) to hold the upper transmission mount to the adaptor block (4) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  29. Lower and remove the floor jack.

  30. Engage the transmission solenoid connector (1) into transmission connector.
  31. Rotate the lock lever (1) clockwise on the transmission solenoid connector.

  32. Place the shift cable in position on the mount bracket (1).
  33. Press the shift cable housing (2) into the mount bracket (1) on the transmission.

  34. Snap the shift cable end (2) in position on the manual lever on the transmission.

  35. Place the ground cable (1) in position and tighten the bolt to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  36. Engage the wire connector (1) into the TCM connector.
  37. Close the lock on the TCM connector (1).
  38. Place the vacuum pump in position on the mount bracket.
  39. Install the nuts to hold the vacuum pump to the mount bracket.
  40. Connect the wire harness connector onto the vacuum pump.
  41. Connect the vacuum line onto the vacuum pump.
  42. Install the battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, INSTALLATION .
  43. Install the power distribution center. Refer to CENTER, POWER DISTRIBUTION (PDC), INSTALLATION .
  44. Install the PCM. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), INSTALLATION .
  45. Raise the vehicle.
  46. Fill the transmission to the proper level with the specified fluid. Refer to TRANSMISSION FILL  .
  47. Install the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, INSTALLATION .
  48. Install NEW  rivets at the lower outboard front fascia to wheel well liners.
  49. Install the front wheels. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  50. Lower the vehicle.
  51. Install the battery. Refer to BATTERY, INSTALLATION .
  52. If transmission is replaced, program the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
    NOTE:

    Note; only perform the Valve Body Solenoid Learn procedure if the valve body and/or the TCM was replaced during a repair. Do not perform this procedure if the repair did not require the valve body and/or TCM to be replaced. Do not perform this procedure if the transmission is being replaced. 

  53. If valve body or the TCM was replaced, perform Valve Body Solenoid Learn procedure.
  54. If transmission is replaced or internal repairs were made, perform Transmission Verification Test-948TE. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST - 948TE 9HP48 .
  55. Road test the vehicle to verify the repair.
