948TE Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Installation: Diesel

WARNING:

Hoisting and jack lift points provided in this service information are for a complete vehicle. When the transaxle is removed, the center of gravity will shift to the rear of the vehicle, possibly creating an unstable condition. Place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicle. Personal injury may result if safety stands are not used.

NOTE:

If installing a new transmission, remove the shipping cap from the vent.

  1. Install the torque converter to the transmission.
  2. While guiding the transmission past obstacles, raise the transmission upward until the engine and the transmission are in line.
  3. Push the bell housing against the engine block until the guide pins engage.

  4. Install the front engine to transmission bolt (1) hand tight.

  5. Install the rear engine to transmission bolt (1) hand tight.

  6. Install the bolts (2) attaching the transmission to engine oil pan hand tight.
  7. Tighten the bolts to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  8. Install the left lower load beam. Refer to LOAD BEAM, LOWER, INSTALLATION .
  9. Install the rear engine mount

    Refer to the appropriate service information .

  10. Place a wooden block (1) between the load beam and the transmission end cover.

  11. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission and verify they are fully seated in the quick connect fittings (1).

    CAUTION:

    It is essential that correct length bolts be used to attach the converter to the driveplate. Failure to follow this caution may result in transmission damage.

  12. Through the starter opening, install the bolts (1) that hold the flexplate to the torque converter and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  13. Install the starter. Refer to STARTER, INSTALLATION .

  14. Install the dust cover (1) and tighten bolt (2) to. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  15. Install the ground cable (1) to the transmission and tighten to. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  16. Install the left engine mount adapter to the transmission and tighten to. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  17. Install the left side engine mount. Refer to the appropriate service information .
  18. Install upper bolts to hold the transmission to the engine block and tighten to. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  19. Connect the transmission solenoid connector (1).
  20. Rotate the lock lever (1) clockwise on the transmission solenoid wire harness connector.

  21. Place the shift cable in position on the mount bracket (1).
  22. Press the shift cable housing (2) into the mount bracket (1) on the transmission.

  23. Snap the shift cable end (2) in position on the manual lever on the transmission.

  24. Install the ground cable (1) to the top of the transmission and tighten the bolt to. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  25. Engage the wire connector (1) into the TCM connector.
  26. Close the lock on the TCM connector (1).
  27. If equipped, install the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Refer to INSTALLATION .
  28. Install the left and right halfshafts. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  29. Install the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) bracket onto engine block and tighten bolts to the proper specification. Refer to the appropriate service information .
  30. Install the DPF (Refer to the appropriate service information ).
  31. Install the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) hose. Refer to the appropriate service information .
  32. Install the battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, INSTALLATION .
  33. Install the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, INSTALLATION .
  34. Install NEW  rivets at the lower outboard front fascia to right front splash shield.
  35. Install the left front fender splash shield. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  36. Install the front wheels. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  37. Lower the vehicle.
  38. Install the battery. Refer to BATTERY, INSTALLATION .
  39. Fill the transmission to the proper level with the specified fluid. Refer to TRANSMISSION FILL  .
  40. If transmission is replaced, program the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
    NOTE:

    Note; only perform the Valve Body Solenoid Learn procedure if the valve body and/or the TCM was replaced during a repair. Do not perform this procedure if the repair did not require the valve body and/or TCM to be replaced. Do not perform this procedure if the transmission is being replaced. 

  41. If valve body or the TCM was replaced, perform Valve Body Solenoid Learn procedure.
  42. If transmission is replaced or internal repairs were made, perform Transmission Verification Test-948TE. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST - 948TE 9HP48 .
  43. Road test the vehicle to verify the repair.
