Symptom Chart

Diagnostics in this article assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods .

In most circumstances, the PCM sets a DTC to help guide with diagnostics. Refer to the DTC Chart before using the Symptom Chart. The Symptom column lists the vehicle condition. The Possible Sources column lists a detailed vehicle condition. The Action column lists the action to be performed to determine the cause of the condition. Each action lists the components that can cause the system and the individual components in that system.

Symptom Possible Sources Action
Brake transmission shift interlock system does not release Circuitry open/shorted
Brake transmission shift interlock switch
GSM
GO to Pinpoint Test Q 
Transmission stuck in park position TRCM
Brake signal issue
NOTE: Fault codes set in the PCM if the TRCM cannot move.

BCM issue with BTSI signal
Mechanical obstruction in the path of the TRCM output arm. INSPECT for debris. If the vehicle can shift from Park with Override, check BTSI signal at BCM.
Shift cable alignment or adjustment. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment  .
TRCM electrical integrity. GO to Pinpoint Test F 
Transmission does not return to park when the door is opened Driver door ajar switch, circuits, BCM or GSM GO to Pinpoint Test E 
No park range Selector lever cable out of adjustment INSPECT the selector lever cable for correct alignment/adjustment. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment  .
Mechanical obstruction in path of the TRCM output arm INSPECT the selector lever cable for correct routing. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment  .
INSPECT for mud or ice obstructing the TRCM output arm.
Transmission stuck in drive GSM or TRCM CHECK for DTCs related to the GSM and TRCM.
Selector lever is out of correct gear relationship Selector lever cable out of adjustment REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment  .
Mechanical obstruction in path of TRCM output arm CHECK the TRCM and selector lever cable for debris or ice in freezing conditions.
Loose selector lever cable bracket CHECK the selector lever cable bracket. TIGHTEN as necessary.
Selector lever cable binding Selector lever cable out of adjustment REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment  .
Internal transmission components damaged CHECK the manual control lever and internal transmission components for damage. REFER to: Automatic Transmission - 2.0L EcoBoost (177kW/240PS) - MI4 . REFER to: Automatic Transmission - 2.3L EcoBoost (201kW/273PS) .
Paddle shift system inoperable TR sensor alignment
Unable to select S position
SELECT P, R, N and D on the GSM. CHECK for TR sensor DTCs. If TR sensor DTCs are present, REFER to: Automatic Transmission - 2.0L EcoBoost (177kW/240PS) - MI4 . REFER to: Automatic Transmission - 2.3L EcoBoost (201kW/273PS) .
INSTALL a new gearshift module.
