General
The trunk lid/tailgate control automatically opens and closes the trunk lid or tailgate.
Function requirements
- Vehicle speed under 1 km/h (relevant from circuit 15 R ON)
- Trunk lid/tailgate control normalized
Open/close trunk lid or tailgate
The opening or closing of the trunk lid or liftgate can be requested via various control elements.
| Control element | Location | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Open trunk lid/tailgate button. | Transmitter key | Opening from outside |
| Trunk lid/liftgate external operation switch | Trunk lid/liftgate | Opening from outside |
| Trunk lid/tailgate control button | Trunk lid/liftgate | Closing from outside |
| Driver trunk lid/tailgate control button | Driver's door | Opening and closing from inside |
| Rear switch module (vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS) | Under rear bumper | Opening and closing from outside via kick movement |
| Push or pull trunk lid or tailgate in desired direction ("Tip to run") | - | Further opening and closing from outside |
| Trunk lid emergency opening switch (Canada version or USA version) | Trunk | Trunk lid unlocking from inside |
The trunk lid/tailgate control is an automated function and thus only possible in the normalized movement.
The trunk lid/tailgate control must be normalized after the replacement of a component or adjustment work to the trunk lid or tailgate.
Normalizing can be performed automatically and manually. In both cases, the process must be started using the diagnostic tester.
Open trunk lid or tailgate
The trunk lid/tailgate lock is unlocked via an actuator motor. The trunk lid or tailgate is then opened until the upper limit point or opening angle limiter is detected.
The position of the trunk lid or tailgate is detected by a Hall sensor. If no signals of the Hall sensor are received, the movement of the trunk lid or liftgate is stopped. The trunk lid or liftgate can then be moved by hand by exerting a slightly increased force.
Close trunk lid or tailgate
The trunk lid or tailgate is closed until the first detent in the trunk lid/tailgate lock is reached. The trunk lid or tailgate is further closed via a lock element (power closing). Once the main detent in the trunk lid/tailgate lock is reached, the closing process is ended.
Opening angle limitation
The opening angle limiter serves for the specification of an end position of the trunk lid or tailgate (garage position or max. opening). Damage due to protruding goods (roof box, surfboard etc.) or a too low ceiling height is thus prevented.
Vehicles with remote trunk closing
The garage position is a specified intermediate position (approx. 50 % of opening width) that is activated/deactivated or can be defined as a new end position via the multimedia system.
Rain protection (model 223): The opening behavior of the trunk lid can be programmed so that a rain protection occurs, i. e. the trunk lid does not open fully. The trunk can thus be loaded and unloaded while the rain can drain off via the trunk lid in the water drain between the body and trunk lid.
Vehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate
First open liftgate to desired position to activate the opening angle limitation function. This can be accomplished manually or automatically via the liftgate control.
Once the tailgate has been manually opened to the desired position, the tailgate control button on the tailgate must be pressed for approx. 2 s.
If the tailgate was automatically opened, the tailgate control button must be pressed once briefly once the tailgate is in the desired position. The liftgate remains in this position. A stopped drive is required for activation of the opening angle limitation function. The tailgate control button is then pressed for approx. 2 s.
The successful storage of the value for the opening angle limiter is confirmed by the output of a warning tone. When the liftgate is opened, it is only opened to this stored position. The opening of the tailgate can be limited to max. 20 cm before the upper end position.
Object recognition
The trunk lid/liftgate control detects obstacles that obstruct or restrict the movement of the trunk lid or liftgate. Obstacles are defined by evaluating the signals of the Hall sensor and power consumption of the drive unit.
If an obstacle is detected during the closing of the trunk lid or tailgate, the trunk lid/tailgate control immediately cancels the closing process. The trunk lid/tailgate control then briefly actuates the trunk lid or tailgate movement in the open direction. In the case of opening, the movement is stopped. The trunk lid or tailgate remains in the current position.
