Pressure Testing
- Remove high pressure hose at steering pump and connect a spare hose to pump fitting. Connect opposite end of spare hose to Test Gauge (C-3309E). See Fig 1
. Connect pressure hose from valve side of steering gear to valve side of gauge. Valve must be installed on outlet side of gauge.NOTE: Replacement fittings are required on Test Gauge (C-3309E) for adapting to "0" ring type hose tube ends.
- With a thermometer in fluid reservoir, start engine and warm fluid to 160°F (72°C). Turning wheels from stop to stop will aid in warming fluid. DO NOT hold wheels against stop.
- With engine at idle speed, gauge open, record maximum pressure while turning steering wheel from stop to stop. The minimum pressure at idle should read 80-125 psi (5.6-8.8 kg/cm2 ) on RWD models, and 30-50 psi (2.1-3.5 kg/cm2 ) on FWD models.
- If pressure is less than specifications, steering system is not functioning properly. To determine which unit is faulty, momentarily close pressure gauge valve and note maximum pressure registered on gauge.
- If pressure reads less than maximum pressure, 1200-1300 psi (87.7-91.4 kg/cm2 ) on RWD models, or 1000-1100 psi (70.3-77.3 kg/cm2 ) on FWD models, the pump is faulty and should be reconditioned.
- If pressure reads low at step 3), but not at step 4), steering gear is at fault. When removing test equipment, ensure hose is installed in original position to avoid interference with engine or sheet metal.
