Description & Operation: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Subaru Impreza. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system, or air bag may deploy. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
CAUTION: Before disassembling or reassembling parts always disconnect battery ground cable. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data; therefore, record memory contents before disconnecting battery ground cable. Otherwise, memory contents are cancelled upon disconnection. Driveability problems could exist until computer systems complete a relearn cycle. Before disconnecting battery, see SUBARU section of COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article under GENERAL INFORMATION.

Reassemble parts in reverse order of disassembly procedure unless otherwise indicated. Adjust parts to specifications contained in this manual if so designated. Fasten connectors and hoses securely during reassembly. After reassembly ensure functional parts operate smoothly.

Airbag system wiring harness is routed near the electrical parts and switch. All airbag system wiring harness and connectors are colored YELLOW. Do not use electrical test equipment on these circuits. Be careful not to damage airbag system wiring harness when servicing the ignition key cylinder. For more information on air bag DIAGNOSIS & TESTING or DISPOSAL PROCEDURES, see lemon-25(R) AIR BAG SERVICE & REPAIR MANUAL, DOMESTIC & IMPORTED MODELS.

NOTE: The system will not operate when the key is in the ignition switch. Also, the system can be armed and disarmed with a remote transmitter.

The security system is equipped with an optional Keyless Entry System integrated with the Anti-Theft Alarm System. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  .

The security system monitors the vehicle through switches on the doors, rear gate and trunk lid, and through an impact sensor. If a switch is tripped while the security system is in active mode, the system interprets this as an unauthorized attempt to enter the vehicle without a proper key. If unauthorized entry is detected, or the sensor senses an abnormal impact to the vehicle, the starter circuit is disabled to prevent starting the vehicle without the proper key and the security system sounds a horn and flashes the parking lights.
