Ignition Timing

CAUTION: Some tachometers may not be compatible with ignition system. Consult tachometer manufacturer before connecting tachometer to ignition system. To avoid possible damage to ignitor and/or coil, DO NOT  allow tachometer terminal to become grounded.
  1. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Shut engine off. Connect timing light to spark plug wire on cylinder No. 1.
  2. On Non-Supercharged models, connect tachometer to proper terminals of data link connector No. 1, located near emergency brake lever. See Fig 1.
  3. On Supercharged models, remove upper panel from instrument panel and connect scan tester to data link connector No. 3. See Fig 1. Scan tester is used to read engine RPM.
  4. On all models, apply parking brake. Place transmission Neutral. Start engine and maintain engine at 2500 RPM for 90 seconds and then allow engine to idle. Ensure idle speed is 700-800 RPM.
  5. Install Jumper Wire (SST 09843-18020) between terminals TE1 and E1 of data link connector No. 1. See Fig 3.
NOTE: Timing marks are located on lower side of front cover.
  6. Ensure base timing is within specification at idle with transmission in Neutral, A/C and all accessories off. See the 4-CYLINDER IGNITION TIMING  table.
  7. On Non-Supercharged models, if ignition timing is incorrect, loosen distributor hold-down bolts. Adjust ignition timing by rotating distributor. Tighten distributor hold-down bolts.
  8. On all models, remove jumper wire from data link connector No. 1. Ensure advance timing is within specification. See the 4-CYLINDER IGNITION TIMING  table. Remove tachometer, timing light and scan tester.
